Week 3 NFL: Namath vs. Unitas

Sunday is the 45th anniversary of Namath throwing for 496 yards in a 44-34 Jets win over the Colts. Unitas threw for 396.

As for this week, I'll be counting Mike Glennon's turnovers against the Steelers. Congrats in advance, oop and the rest of you Yinzer rubes.

If Glennon has any kind of a O-Line and get more than 3 seconds to throw, he'll find some open receivers.
Steelers have a good-to-great D-Line. Secondary is a dumpster fire.

Watching Unitas drop back to pass (hunched over with those skinny legs) reminds me of Monty Burns. Great arm though! Great TD pass on the flea flicker.

Loved watching that!

I looked him up. The next week, he caught four passes for 85 yards, then the following week, caught just one five-yard pass against Miami. Fantasy owners must really have been pissed off that week.

Guys who snagged Eddie Bell off the waiver wire had it worse. He caught just one pass the next week for 32 yards, then missed a week, then played the third week and caught one pass for 17 yards. He did have a couple decent games later in the season, but nothing like that day in Baltimore.

Those are astonishing numbers for that era.

Was just thinking how weird it is that the game has been taken over by passing but it has become much less exciting. Short passes and completion pct. are boring. So you have guys now putting up huge numbers but they're doing it in a way that makes the game less fun and more predictable.

Well, the deal is passing was so much more risky then, so when you did it you went for big yardage to make the potential return exceed the risk.
