I would totally skip it if I could because I generally dislike weddings, but I don't want to be the bad guy. I'm already getting a lot of grief over skipping the reception from our mutual friends.

And it's going to be a really ****ty day. Covering a morning skate. Wedding. Then hockey game. And we're supposed to get a rain/snow mix all day long.

Regarding my intolerance for weddings, I just think they're fake for the most part. It's not about celebrating your marriage. It's about seeing who can blow $25,000 of their parents' money on crap like flower arrangements.

Just go to the justice of the peace, sign some paper, get a room and knock it out.

Sure it does. But I don't think that has anything to do with him buying any sort of gift or not...or attending, really. They're paying for him to enjoy (presumably) free food and beverages. A person may not choose that sort of wedding for himself, but who is he/she to judge how other people choose to celebrate their marriage?
