I used to play a ton when I was younger, and got to where I could score in the mid-80s consistently.

I've gotten back into the game recently, am mediocre but still love it and like the group I regularly play with.

I'm relatively happy with my irons and short game, but my driver is an old one and inconsistent. Got the go-ahead from my wife to invest in a new driver, and I'm committed to getting fitted for it (my first-ever club fitting). My question is, are driver fittings universal across all brands and models, or will I need to pick out the brand and model of driver I'm looking for, then get specifically fitted for that exact club, have it tweaked to fit my swing, etc.?

Appreciate any insight!

Getting fitted really helped me improve.

Here’s what I can tell you from my experience. I went in with no favorite brands in mind and said that I wanted whatever gave me the best results in my price range.

The fitter had be bring a 6-iron from the set I was using and took data from maybe 15-20 swings. And then I tested with 5-6 brands of irons and drivers. With different shaft combos.

For you I’d guess you’ll get data on your current driver and start there.

Just go in with an open mind and see what the results find.

I thought the whole process was fun and interesting.

I didn't get fit, but I took a recommendation from a pro I trust who has seen me play golf and bought from the Callaway pre-owned store for a fraction of the cost of a new driver. Ended up with a Mavrik from two years prior that really helped my game. Much more consistent off the tee and my misses are no longer terrible misses. I mean, I have to work hard to slice the ball the way I used to. My swing and tempo has improved as well, but the updated driver definitely helped. My previous driver was a Cleveland Burner from the late 2000s.

Had a fitting and got a new set of clubs for a Christmas present from my wife five years ago. Wound up with TaylorMade driver and 3-wood and Calloway irons. Very happy with the results. Still keep my old Wilson 8802 putter, though.
