Although if there was anybody God made for a pie fight, it was Urkel.

Some people are versed in ancient epistles and tomes. Others know our history of pie fights.

And most of the actors who vanish from the scene I want to think have appeared in an on-screen pie fight.

Adam Sandler has tried non-comedy roles, with limited success because everyone keeps thinking of him as a comic.

Not sure about that. He was good in "Spanglish," but working with Tea Leoni usually helps.

OTOH, I think he's somewhere between ridiculous and completely over-the-top otherwise, except for maaaaybe "Happy Gilmore."

Sandler comes across as generally funny and he seems to get it. His comedies - or attempts at it - were dumb, but continuing to get eight-figure paydays either shows that I'm FOS and/or others have distinctly different ideas of comedy.

I was watching Buckaroo Banzai the other night, and Clancy Brown played one of the Hong Kong Cavaliers. He played a smart cowboy, and it was a definite departure from pretty much anything he did later.

The character was known only by a codename, Rawhide. I can't remember if he actually wore cowboy gear. Jeff Goldblum's character is dressed like a cowboy during the end credits, during which Rawhide inexplicably shows up even though they killed off the character in the movie.

This post sent me to IMDB. That led to the discovery that they shot flashback scenes with Jamie Lee Curtis as Buckaroo Banzai's mother, but they were all deleted. Of course, I had to find that as well.

his outfit wasnt as outlandish as Goldblum’s, but he wore a cowboy hat in several scenes, which of figured was a nod to the name?

I watched that and Highlander back-to-back. I wish I could like Buckaroo Banzai...just can’t do it.

I'm sure if I watched it now, I wouldn't like it, either. At the time, I was entertained. In my defense, I was 12 when that movie came out.

Michael Cera as a socially awkward teenage type ... Arrested Development, Superbad, Scott Pilgrim, Juno, Crystal Fairy & The Magical Cactus, the list goes on.

Octavia Spencer said she's played a nurse about 15 times in her career. And she has played a character labeled as a "nurse" 15 times on IMDB - so the number is probably higher.
A ton of character actors do a lot of "cop" roles, or maybe they are more the "doctor" type, or the "priest" type.

She was great in Outward and almost stole the show in Lamb.

Leoni is underrated. Spanglish hit that sweet spot between comedy and drama. Sandler was really great in that one.

He also changes shirts. I think the closing credits were supposed to serve as a curtain call.

Wasn't the joke that Goldblum's character was a brilliant scientist but clueless about cowboy culture?

FWIW, I bought the movie when it came out on DVD. The "extras" treated the whole thing like it was based on a true story, which was dumb. The only time I've seen that done well was the commentary track for Tropic Thunder. I still have a degree of affection for Buckaroo Banzai. It's stupid fun.

I remember very little about the actual plot. I don't think I've seen it since I was 12, but it stuck with me just for the weird fun.

The curtain call thing does make sense.
