News & Observer names guy Tar Heel of the Week. His wife comes forward and says he was arrested for assaulting her in December (the background check on the guy didn't turn up the arrest because of police snafu). Guy was recommended by N&0 publisher. Reporters want to follow up with assault info. Exec ed says, "Move along people, nothing to write here."

Well, it's out there now, whether they wanted to write about it or not.

Does she think the story was going to just go away? Publisher should fire this woman now. If she's willing to kill one story like this, what's to say she won't kill more important stories she doesn't think is "not important?"

It pays to be friends with the publisher. And, by the way, the N&O has been whacking people left and right even though circulation has increased in the past year, according to the ABC.

They're not the only McClatchy paper doing that. Between the Herald's issues and the debt load the idiot Pruitt took on when he bought Knight Ridder, we're all getting cut to the bone.

Funny ... the same people who want to light up Mike Krzyzewski and others - hold their feet to the fire, if you will - think they can make someone's criminal record simply disappear.

I shouldn't be surprised. Orage Quarles hasn't had the smoothest run in Raleigh, and this obviously doesn't help.

Blog has been updated with the note that N&O exec editor John Drescher says the story-kill rumor is unfounded and their readers should look forward to a folo ... "when all the fact-checking is complete."

Meaning "Oh ****. We're busted. Time to cover our asses."

Well, it could be two things: "not true" could mean he wasn't arrested. Hope this is the case. If "not true" refers to sitting on the story... my bull**** meter is pegged. It's been a week. A week. I've a feeling the readers would never have heard about this other information had the blogger not pantsed the N&O in public.

If the pub is buds with the perp then maybe the pub killed the folo.

Sockpuppet took that job on the desk of Variety, I think.

... and not seeing it today on the web, either.

boy, those raleigh guys sure are triple-, quadruple- and quintuple-checking that story they were already "working on," aren't they?

The promised update finally runs.

Yep, that took more than a week to compile and fact-check.
