SEATTLE - There were a few surprises for the University of Washington's Class of 1957 when they opened a time capsule sealed 50 years ago.

Among audiotapes and copies of the yearbook and school newspaper were 1980s-era porn, a condom and some dirty underwear.

Alumni opened the capsule earlier this week in preparation for a public unveiling Saturday during a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the university's communications program. The capsule had been placed in an interior wall of the then-new Communications Building in 1957.

The capsule is being replaced by another created by a student-faculty team.

"The good news is that all the things that were in there are still there," said Jerry Baldasty, chairman of the Department of Communication. "The interesting news is that some other things were added."

There aren't any suspects in the case. But it was located outside the offices of The Daily _ the campus newspaper _ and it's assumed someone from the paper was responsible for the revisionism, said communication alumni and development manager Victoria Sprang.

The new capsule will be filled with digital media with a focus on "communication from a global perspective," said Coma Te, a senior among six students who created the new capsule.

When I was in college, I would have done some **** like that.
As would numerous people on this board, judging from their posts....

That being said, this is a proud day for college journalists everywhere

since the porn was 1980's vintage, I'm guessing the underwear was bikini style, since thongs really didn't start to catch on until the early 1990s.

I'm pretty sure I posted this story before, but I'm gonna do it again in the spirit of this thread. Back during the late 70's UCLA and Oregon State where in race for the PAC-10 mens basketball title. With only one or two games left in the season, Oregon State to UCLA and ended up losing a very tight game that would've clinched the conference championship for them. The next day, the headline in the sports section of the Daily Bruin read Beavers Muff chance to Snatch PAC-10 crown. Needless to say, this got a lot of laughs.

We used to watch porn in high school We had activity period once a month during first period. I was in TV worskhop at the time and when the speech club met, a bunch of us would go into the studio and watch TV. Couple of times people brought in porn, and guys and girls watched it. It was fun, plus kind of a rush knowng we could get caught in school.

We did get busted watching Toxic Avenger though. Luckily not the part where the bad guy tells the blind chick to meet Ben Dover.

George: Uh, Mr. President, Sir. People are becoming a bit... confused by the way your and your opponent are, well, constantly holding hands.

Kang: We are merely exchanging long protein strings. If you can think of a simpler way, I'd like to hear it.

As a Washington State alumnus, my first thought was: Washington has a communication program? :-)

This is some high-class pranksterism.
Certainly no place for these people in modern newspapers.
