Plans for Memorial Day weekend?

Off today, then working my usual Sunday and Monday desk shifts. My “holiday” will be Thursday, so at least I’ll still get a three day weekend. Just a different one than my wife and most of my neighbors.

I had to turn the heat back on, as it's 49 and rainy. Should be good for the parade tomorrow, my daughter is marching with the middle school band. I have some work to catch up on that I couldn't finish on Friday, but luckily, I don't have to work a shift or anything like that.

My town canceled our long-time memorial Day parade because they said felt it had gotten too 'festive.' I have never gone, so I don't know if it's too festive. So they're having a march instead. Don't ask me to explain the difference because there probably isn't one. I remember when we did Memorial Dayv in high school, it was a short parade into the cemetery and there was a ceremony at the big grave site for military dead. They let us wear summer uniforms because it was always hot, and once we got to the cemetery we were on just drum rims. And inevitably 72% of the band would be giggling even though we were supposed to be solemn. Because when you're a teenager and you're supposed to be solemn, you giggle.

I used to love the Memorial Day parades when I was a kid. I was a big fire engine nerd and all the departments in our town would participate in the parades, so it was fun to see all the equipment. Our town had seven or eight stations and they all had their own color for their engines — one station was red, one was yellow, one was white, one was safety green, etc. — so it was visually fun for an 8-year-old as well.
We had two parades every year. One was smaller and up the street, the other was bigger and across town. Pretty sure I made my parents drag me to both so I could see all the fire engines.
