Spring Football Practice

I won't lie. I started this thread just so I'd have somewhere to put this.

If you ask me what I miss least about working at a newspaper, covering spring football practice is No. 1 on the list. Pointless exercise. Would rather cover high school cross country.

Covering cross country is underrated. You just show up near the end and get the results. You can't see 90 percent of the event anyway because they're running through the woods.

Didn't mind covering soccer either, because I usually just surfed the internet and looked up when the crowd started to get excited. Then afterward find out who scored the goals.

But yes, football practice, at any time and at any level (even high-level college and the NFL), is mind-numbing.

I can bike to Redskins camp in 10 minutes. People ask me why I never go, and it's because I had to cover so much damn football practice that there's no way I could ever watch it as a fan. It's ruined for me.

My memory is a bit hazy, but I recall one time a caller wanted to talk about the NHL to, I think it was Francesca, and Francesca didn't want to talk hockey and wanted to wait until playoff time. The caller pointed out that Francesca had spent days talking about the NFL draft, which was two months away. Then he got hung up upon.

As far as spring practice goes, I also agree. I think of Allen Iverson. "we're talking about PRACTICE!"

Friends asked me how the team looked at practice. I usually said, "Well, this receiver was better than that cornerback on a few plays. But then that cornerback was better than this receiver on some other plays. The offense looked pretty good going against the redshirt freshmen on defense. ... Oh, and there was a fight between two linemen. That only happens just about every day."
