So THIS is HDTV?

I watched some bowl games at a friend's house and I thought the HD was incredible. So, there goes the gender theory.

I'm also an exception to the gender theory.
I can easily see the difference. I just don't think it's anything to get worked up about.
For example, I don't drink much soda, but I prefer Pepsi over Coke. I can taste the difference, but I'm not adamant about my preference. I will drink Coke quite readily, but if I have a choice, I choose Pepsi.
However, if Pepsi cost three to five times as much as Coke, I would choose Coke.

I can easily see the difference. It's most pronounced on football games.

My wife can't tell the difference between a show recorded on tape (like Barney Miller) and a show on film (like pretty much everything now). It must be like the deal that women have a higher tolerance for pain or something. Men have a lower tolerance for ****ty TV.

Fortunately, my wife encouraged me to buy the DLP. God, I love her.

Wait till you see the dolphins on the Discovery channel.
Actually, Discovery and PBS have the coolest HDTV stuff
Ms. Slappy also sees the difference quite clearly.. she complains when she has to watch a regular channel because it isnt as clear...

Damn you! Damn you HD exceptions! Damn you HD exceptional people!!

HAve a home theater system with upconversion and a Vizio LCD tv...
Threw Slapshot in the dvd player tonight and laughed my ass off. what a classic.

I have no graphics. Just a CBS station, some PBS stuff and some kids channels. I see no pores, though, and everything's kind of dark and a little fuzzy. Weird.

If it's dark and fuzzy, it's not HD.
No way.

Have you tried the HD porn?

On a side note to that, the ladies are not that happy with what is going on.

The size of your screen probably had something to do with it, too.
I suspect a hotel TV is not exactly a big screen.

On our new 40-inch wide screen, which we moved to from an aging 27-inch old-schooler, the different set my hair on fire.

We really didn't give a crap, but the old one was dying and we went for it. Nothing like the really huge screens out there, but big enough.

Apples and oranges. We started flipping back for forth from a game on DirecTV, digital but not HD, to the same game on the HD digital cable package, on the same TV. The difference was really noticeable then. And the DirecTV signal's not bad at all.

In fact, I've realized that absolutely nothing sucks on a 40-inch wide screen LCD. Not even something taped on the VCR.

My wife can tell the difference. I can tell the difference. It is very noticeable.

I hope I'm never such a TV snob South Park just isn't funny on the 13-incher in the kitchen.

I find these days, when I'm watching HDTV, my eyes close every time I talk.

I, for one, will not rest until I can see every single zit on Jenna Jameson's ass.

Let's say it's noticeable. I have no idea. I still have a 27-inch Magnavox that I bought in 1991 for $500, and it works perfectly well. Does it really enhance anything?

Does a better picture make it more entertaining? Would you like pictures of your newborn more in color than in black & white? To me, it's what's on there, not how clearly it comes through, that matters. If looking at a pretty picture is what you like, go to an art museum. I hope I'm never such a TV snob South Park just isn't funny on the 13-incher in the kitchen.

Look, a 92 Grand Am is going to get you to a grocery store just as surely as a late-model Lexus. It's just not as sweet a ride.

I was at a party the afternoon that New England beat San Diego ... the folks had a big HD flatscreen and the difference in the picture was quite apparent. When they showed the obligatory blimp shot, I swear I think you could have counted every individual fan in the stands of you had so wished. Like watching the game through a window.

I first encountered HD in Europe in 1992 ... they were showing it off in Albertville. Still the best trick I've seen ... an HD TV showing a tight shot of an aquarium. Looks real.

Junkie, they're not all pricey. I just bought one in November for roughly $1000. Best of both worlds ... rich color and reliability of CRT with HDTV.

The difference is striking, though. Sounds like IJAG's hotel forked out for the plasma and did very little with making the connections worthy of telling that it's HDTV. Which basically means the hotel doled out money for flash and forgot the substance ...

And reading this, I'm starting to wonder why so many on here ***** about how little they get paid. Perhaps a little bit more conscientious spending is in order?

If I'm going to spend money, it's tough to think of anything I'd get better bang for the buck than a good TV. I certainly spend enough time with it.

IJAG,

Something must be wrong with the set up. You should definitely be able to tell the difference.

To me, only cleanly shot HD video has the mild "3D" effect (the stuff on Discovery HD, HDNet, etc.) Whereas, film-- your CSIs your Grey's, etc. just looks very sharp in comparison to SD.

But yeah, on video (or live sports), you should see pores, freckles, specks of dirt on golf balls.....

That said, some of the networks cut corners. CBS doesn't use all HD cameras on its sporting events... and TNT HD upconverts (simply transfers to fit the 16:9 format) many of its movies, which I don't think should be legal.

Buck is sort of right in that HD doesn't generally blow people away.... But for a lot of people it "spoils" standard definition. For example, if you watch a lot of HD (which I do), and then you watch something in SD, you'll find yourself saying, "Why's it so blurry?"

You are a Pepsi person? I used to like you.

Male. And I absolutely see the difference. Only thing it matters to me on is sports. Especially when you watch HD and non-HD games back to back. You really notice the difference.

I hated watching the Bears this weekend and last because we don't get Fox in HD. Our cable company REALLY needs to make that available. It's so grainy. I find that with HD, it's almost as if I'm actually at the game because I see the players so clearly.
