You beat me to the punch, Moddy. I thought he'd get one more year, but I guess having the flagship programs both finish 11th in the ACC was too tough a pill to swallow for the swayin' Cavaliers.

I can only speculate that a certain young head coach in your building will be at the top of their list. They could do a lot worse.

They want the previous young coach in that building. A fine choice, I say.

How long until the Beilein-to-UVa rumors start? Coached 5 years at Richmond, has always wanted to coach in the ACC -- remember, he had all but left WVU for NC State in 2006 before the Wolfies couldn't pony up enough for his buyout.

It's the ACC and all, but isn't Oklahoma going to be a better job than Virginia?

And I'm a little surprised they pulled the trigger so quickly. Quickly, at least, in comparison to Gillen, who was on the hot seat since Thomas Jefferson died.

Houston Fancher resigns at Appalachian State.

BOONE - Houston Fancher resigned as men's basketball head coach at Appalachian State tonight, effective immediately.
In nine seasons, Fancher posted a 137-136 overall record, which included three Southern Conference North Division championships (2002-03, 2006-07 and 2007-08). In 2006-07, he led Appalachian to a school-record 25 wins, the San Juan Shootout championship and a berth in the National Invitation Tournament. He was named the SoCon Coach of the Year in 2002-03 after winning the first of his three North Division titles.

I remember him making an impassioned speech after the team lost in in the '05 conference tournament. With the new chancellor in the back of the room (and a search going on for the next AD), Houston went on and on about how this is where he wanted to be and for people like him, coaching Appalachian State was a destination job and not a detour.
I never really had problems with him, but I am also not surprised.

Jeff Goodman reports, not surprisingly, that it was not Houston's decision:

Based on what he's done the last three years at Duquesne (plus dealing with those five players shot shortly after he arrived), Ron Everhart's gotta get some run for a job like Virginia. He inherited a cesspool and turned it into a Jacuzzi.

He's a Hokie, though...I know the train ran southwest when Ricky Stokes was in Blacksburg, but the Wahoo faithful may not be so forgiving.

How good a job is Virginia, really?
Good league, decent facilities, but terminally and permanently middle-of-the-pack, isn't it? Tubby's closer to winning his league now than he would be at UVa for 10 years.
