As someone who began watching the VMAs in the late 90s during my Backstreet Boys phase (I was a teeny bopper, I have no shame), I turned away from MTV during college. I turned it on tonight just to see Britney -- I was proud of her for making it through the entire performance. I thought she would cancel.
Besides her and Justin Timberlake (where are the other members of 'N Sync?), I don't know who the vast majority of these people are. I think Linkin Park might be screaming right now. The production has been sad. I've seen repeats of the VMAs from the mid-90s with amazing performances of Snoop Dogg's "Murder was the Case The Case That They Gave Me" and Bone Thugs "Crossroads." And there was the classic Nirvana performance that began with "Rape Me" and ended with the bassist hitting himself on the head with his bass. Oh and Dave Grohl yelling "Axl." (I think I have those performances right. If not, I apologize).
What is wrong with music today? I am 22 and sick of MTV.
