Running MTV VMAs thread

You know, I thought it was pretty ballsy for JT to call for MTV to play more videos while accepting two awards, and him taking a shot at the reality programming with the three girls from The Hills standing right there was hilarious.

But honestly, the whole "MTV doesn't actually play music anymore" complaint is a little played out at this point. Do you think the MTV people give two ****s what a bunch of people in the SportsJournalists.com demographic think about their programming? Here's a hint: MTV isn't designed to appeal to us. We outgrew their target a long time ago.

If MTV thought playing more videos would bring in more money, they'd do it in a heartbeat. Want MTV to start playing more videos? Maybe JT should challenge more artists to step up and create videos that are compelling enough that people will want to watch them all the way through. Make the art form evolve so that it compels people to watch it. Seriously, even if it is at odd hours, the music channels DO play videos. When was the last time you sat down and had your attention held for any length of time by music videos being played in full, back-to-back?

Through the first half of the show last night, I thought it was a train wreck. But after a while, I began understanding it a little more - it was designed exactly like everything else in their programming schedule, quick-hitting fluff. By having the "parties" all over the hotel, they even found a way to chop down the music performances to brief snippets like they do with the videos on TRL.

Want something to ***** about? Take a look at Viacom's other music channel - VH1. There's your real culprit. That channel IS targeting people our age, and they're getting away with the same crap over and over and over again. How many "I Love the ..." shows and knock-offs are we going to watch? How many C-level celebrities can we have running weekly competition shows following the EXACT SAME FORMAT? Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, The Pick-Up Artist, Charm School... the list goes on and on.

MTV sucks ass. Big time. But the fact that we feel that way is just evidence that the network wouldn't be doing its job if we didn't think it sucked ass. It's not for us anymore. We can romanticize the early days when the chanel played music videos, but what they were doing then was just a reflection of the times. I said this before on the Real World threads: MTV is a mirror to mass culture, not the thing that's influencing it. But read that Stuever essay. It says it much better than I could.

West, waiting for an elevator in a crowded hallway, began yelling about losing all five categories for which he was nominated.

West said he never will return to MTV.

She actually didn't look that awful in her underwear. I mean, if someone who looked like her showed up at a pool party in that outfit, nearly every guy would go "Daymn!" It's just that you've got to have a little bit better game than that if you're going to strut around on basic cable.
