My timing before I left the house to catch the school bus was based around catching the Headline Sports update at 19 minutes past the hour.

But I could not abide Van Earl Wright. The whole point of Headline News/Sports was to get to the point and pack as much information into the segment as possible. without fluff. He made it about himself with his increasingly bizarre pronunciations and enunciations and how he would say, "Headline Sports" at the end of the report. He didn't understand the assignment. He sucked.

As an east coast kid who loved a west coast team, I knew I needed to be out of shower by 18 minutes after the hour if I any hope of seeing ok Headline News if the Blazers won the night before.

It was all part of that "Sports with an attitude!" schtick that began in the 1990s. Everything from that moment had to be in your face.
