A storm that has caused flooding in the Bay Area has also felled one of the icons of the Sierra. The tunnel tree, known as the Pioneer Cabin Tree , came down. Apparently it was a matter of time as the thing that made it iconic also spelled its doom. RIP great tourist trap of the mountains.

It was tough getting my Chevy through it back in Aught Seven.

I wish I had seen the Wye Oak on Maryland's Eastern Shore before it toppled over around ten years ago.

I've seen some big trees in Vancouver. I guess they were sequoias?

And South Carolina has some big trees (relative to typical East Coast sizes) at the Congaree Swamp National Park. Worth the out of the way visit.

Giant sequoias only grow on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada.
Vancouver might have coastal redwoods or dawn redwoods. I'm not sure.
Coastal redwoods are still huge, often even taller than giant sequoias, but they don't have the girth of the big trees.

It is hard to describe the scale of a giant sequoia. Rather, it is hard to appreciate it until you witness it in person.

Wonder if Bill Bryson ever got to drive through it? There was a whole section of The Lost Continent where he treks way out of his way to the (wrong) park trying to find it.
