TMZ is reporting that Rue McClanahan died at 1:00 a.m. after a massive stroke.

I read a few months ago that after McClanahan had her (first?) stroke, Betty White sent her flowers and a card that read, "I hope you die, so I can be the last Golden Girl."

No word on whether Abe Vigoda put her up to it.

Oh well. RIP.

Betty was the one who was supposed to play Blanche, given her penchant in playing the vamp and being snarky on MTM.

Abe wouldn't put her up to do that! Michael Corleone would have had Abe whacked.

Wasn't there one member of that cast who was hated by everyone else? I think it was either Rue or Betty White, IIRC.

I'm so sad. I grew up with that show. I looked forward to those nights as a pre-teen then as a teen going over to my grandmother's house and watching that show when it came on Saturday nights.

Along with the rest of the cast, Rue was an indelible part of my growing up years.

RIP Blanche Devereaux. Much love always.

And in your memory, I have "Edge of Seventeen" playing.

Which Southern Belle actress/character who died this year was greater: McLanahan's Blanche or Dixie Carter's Julia Sugarbaker?

McClanahan said it was Bea Arthur because Arthur didn't like being part of an ensemble.

Bea apparently didn't like Betty White:

When we came to Betty White, Bea said, "I couldn't stand her." At first I thought she was kidding and didn't quite know what to say so I just asked her why. "Because," she said in that throaty drawl of hers, "she was a *****cat." I remembered hearing a story years and years ago about how 'someone' used to take dumps in Betty's trailer's bathroom and never flush. It was often rumored to be Bea. Apocryphal or not, after that day at her house I thought it might be true.

Conrad Bain was "married" to both of them - to Dixie on "Diff'rent Strokes," and to Rue on "Maude."

His co-stars are dropping like ****ing flies. If I'm Charlotte Rae, I'm making sure my life insurance is paid up.

And RIP, Rue.

In honor of Blanche Devereaux will the lid of Rue's coffin be shaped like a headboard?

DoubleJ, I forgot that Mr. Drummond was married to Dixie in the later years of "Diff'rent Strokes."

What ever happened to Dudley, Arnold's buddy??? He must be around.

I always remember watching the show as a kid, then one season premiere, they were going to have Blanche announce she was pregnant.

There was all sorts of hype about the show, then it turned out, she was having menopause.

I stopped watching the show shortly after.

RIP. It was a fine show, and she was an excellent actress.
