RIP Denny Crum

The description TV guys always used with Crum's teams in the '80s is that they were long.

Also, Journey.

One of the first high-profile coaches I got to interview as a sophomore reporter at the student paper, last year of the Metro Conference. Came off as a nice guy in that limited setting at least. RIP.

Co-founded LEO, aka, the Louisville Eccentric Observer, the alternate paper in Louisville. Essential reading when I lived there. RIP for that alone.

He was an assistant on Wooden's great teams before going to Louisville. Would have beaten UCLA and played for the 1975 title if a 90% free-throw shooter could have made the front end of a 1-and-1 in the final 20 seconds. He missed, and Richard Washington scored to advance UCLA to face Kentucky.

I was convinced from the moment I saw that cool cardinal going to the basket on the cover of the Sports illustrated preview issue that Louisville was going to win it all that year. I loved that team -- Junior Bridgeman, Allen Murphy, Bill Bunton, Wesley Cox...

Heh. They can't do illustrations of a "Crimson Tide" or a "Hoosier."

I remember that game well. Was the free throw shooter Terry Howard? Looking up his stats, he was 28 for 29 at the line that year. But, watching it, you had the sinking feeling the pressure was going to get to him on that foul shot.

They could have used an elephant for 'Bama. I think they did about as well as they could with the Hoosier.

That's in the running for my all-time favorite SI cover (non-swimsuit category).

Yes, I think that sounds like the guy. I remember watching that game on Saturday afternoon, can't remember who Kentucky beat, probably Kansas.

I think so. I remember it was the first free throw the player had missed all year.
