RIP David Ogden Stiers

For years, I would have sworn on a stack of bibles that Stiers has a cameo in the mid 1980s Schwarzenegger film, Commando, as they guy who gets gunned down as he is taking out the garbage. Quickly, revealed that he was a member of an elite fighting unit that are being picked off one by one. In my mind, that part was a wink and a nod to Winchester. Turns out, it was just random actor.

When Charles Emerson Winchester's character arrives at the 4077th, Hawkeye or BJ says, "Let's beat the Christmas rush and starting hating him now."
One of the great lines.

To Klinger, when the enlisted switch places with officers:

"I refuse to take my case to a lower species!"

For a show to replace three leads with three characters who not only fit into the show seamlessly, but improved it - like Stiers did replacing Linville - is pretty amazing.

"You can cut me off from the civilized world. You can incarcerate me with two moronic cellmates. You can torture me with your thrice daily swill, but you cannot break the spirit of a Winchester. My voice shall be heard from this wilderness and I shall be delivered from this fetid and festering sewer."

That was a good remembrance of Stiers.

I liked him in MASH, but didn't love him. The eye-opener for this Star Trek fan with regard to Stiers came with the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Half A Life."

He and Majel Barrett Roddenberry guest starred in the episode, and it featured tour de force performances by both, making for one of the best, most poignant Next Gen episodes there is.
