If they're doing it in an incredibly blatant way, doesn't the ref have the latitude to instead call unsportsmanlike conduct? Plus, the game can't end on a penalty, and at under 2:00, it might go up for a booth review. If you're just going to disregard the rules so thoroughly, it could also fall under the "unfair act" part of the rule book. And besides all that - I think it's far more likely that the team ****s up trying to commit a blatant penalty than it does just playing things out naturally.

Don't know if the NFL officials have that latitude. But you probably would have seen it done before/teams practice it for just these situations.

They can do it once, but after that the officials can (and should) rule it an unfair act (15 yards, 1st down, reset clock).

I’d rather win the coin toss than tie the game at the end of regulation: Before the KC game, teams scoring the final points of regulation in an OT playoff game were 2-10 in the previous 12 games.
Momentum in baseball is only as good as the next day’s starting pitcher. Momentum in the NFL is only as good as the coin toss result.

Some of the secondary play in the bills-chiefs game left a bit to be desired - but I can understand it somewhat the way Allen and Mahomes were gaining chunks on the ground with their feet.

Bengals have more of a shot than people think - the Chiefs were near the bottom of the league in pass defense and sacks this year.

I think that was when they finally changed it, but IIRC Peter King started banging the drum after the Chargers won the coin toss and drove down the field to beat the Colts in a wild card game in the 2008 season. Ironically, the Chargers won that game with a touchdown which still would have ended things under the new rules.
This is from 2010, but it's pretty clear he had been putting the bug in the ear of owners and anybody with the power to do something about it for a couple of years at that point.
