My Colon

I'm glad you made it out in 1 piece.
Mine is a month from yours, and I'm sure as the big day gets closer, I'll revisit this thread and it will SCARE THE LIVING **** OUT OF ME!!!
My doc doesn't think I have cancer but my recent symptoms call for a colonscopy, so it's better safe than sorry.
It figures, I just turn 40 and boom, welcome to middle age.

I got this done about a year ago. I was supposed to drink about a gallon of this orange liquid to make me go. But my wife misread the directions, and she had me drink TWO gallons.
I was in absolute agony, and I started to realize she was wrong, and I started to think about stories I'd heard where people died from drinking too much liquid. She called the doctor, and he laughed. My wife was in tears because I was hurting so bad and she knew she'd messed up. I started going soon afterward, all worked out OK.
Then, a couple of months later, the story came out about the radio station and the woman dying from drinking too much liquid.
I reminded her of that.

and pulled it out as a get out of jail free card?

I never get out of jail free (or even for a price, except on bizness).
But I could torture her a little.

CU's right. I think forty is the age everybody's supposed to have one.

But if you have bad family history, bad poop, bad bellyaches, or a bad feeling that your ass is going to come back and bite you in the, um, ass, then you should get one sooner.

Isn't 50 the age men are encourage to get colonoscopies?

I think at 40 - barring the warning signs mentioned earlier in the thread - one is very much encouraged to get 'scoped.

At 50, they're pretty much mandatory. Then, absent any visible problems, at least every 3 years thereafter.

Having witnessed the death of two family members to colon cancer, I can say that you should be running to a doctor and begging him to snake a camera-tipped hose up your ass right now.

Two days of discomfort is far better than the alternative.

I learned this evening that a beloved aunt of mine has been given just weeks -- maybe a few months -- to live after a diagnosis of carcinoma. Not to get into DocTalk's territory, but that's a malignant form of cancer that starts from the skin and spreads inward.

She's one of those people who's always been fashionably tan ... which, of course, may not mean a thing.

Something else that some (many?) of us need to have checked, I reckon.

My wife followed me yesterday in having the colonoscopy done.

She was dreading it primarily because she hated having IVs inserted.

But, it all went well and she was so relieved and happy to get that off the to-do list.
