I'll still call them that. They're not as good as the Dodgers made them look. I probably watched the Mets play more games in-person than any non-East Coast SportsJournalists.com member, and they are easily the most overrated team. They got some pitching miracles and a lot of help from the rollercoaster Dodgers. I'll be shocked if they reach the Fall Classic.

I don't think Glavine going 6 shutout IP should ever be considered much of a miracle. John Maine was a surprise, sure, but Trachsel has been around for a while. He's thrown some decent games before.

All three games were about average, perhaps slightly below, for those starters this year on the Mets.

It will be Cards-Mets in the NLCS, a better match up for the Mets because other than Carpenter, the Cards' pitching is a bigger mess than the Mets'.

I don't remember a first round where so few of the games were tight. Fourteen games and the only one that really had me on the edge of my chair was Game 2 of the Tigers-Yankees. I also don't recall four series where hitting with men on base was so ****ty.

Yes but when the team you root for advances on the same day the evil team you root against is eliminated, it becomes one of the great days in baseball fandom history.

After I missed all of my picks in the first round I should probably know better to stay away, but I will try again.
Oakland has limited offense outside of Frank Thomas, but I think its pitching is plenty good enough to shut down the free-swinging Detroit Tigers. Plus, I fear the Tigers are acting a little too much like they just won the World Series, when there is still plenty of business left.
A's in six.
In the NL, I can't fathom a team with Jeff Weaver as its No. 2 starter winning a best-of-seven and as bad as everyone is making the Mets pitching out to be, their offense is easily the best left in the postseason.

Indeed, you hit it on the head: The Mets are overrated.
They have a very good team. A good offense and some suspect pitching. But the fact is they won the NAAAtional League and that doesn't mean ****. Look at the Cardinals. They are playing in the NLCS with the worst pitching staff of any playoff team of recent memory and a highly suspect offense outside of Albert Pujols. If the Blue Jays or White Sox or Angels played in the NAAAtional League, they would have easily made the playoffs.
Also, after you take Carlos Beltran's **** out of your mouth answer me this: Do you, as a Mets fan, want a ****ing banner hung for tying for the best record in the regular season? Good job Mets. Way to go. As the proverbial favorites to win it all, I sure as hell hope they don't choke for your sake.

I'd like to see the A's win it all so Frank can get a ring for a Series he actually played in. He wore out his welcome by becoming a bitter old man his last couple of years with the Sox, but he's one of the more underrated players of his generation. He deserves to play his way into a championship.

I am surprised. I figured all White Sox fans would want to see him fail. So, is he still liked by White Sox fans?

All the Sox fans I know have no problem with Frank doing well. As I said, he became kind of a pain in the ass but he's the greatest player in team history. I spent more than a decade rootingfor the guy; no reason to stop now. Of course, if he goes into the Hall of Fame wearng an A's hat, well ...

The Cardinals don't have the worst rotation of any playoff team in recent memory because they have Carpenter. He's the best pitcher left in the playoffs and was the second-best -- behind Santana -- coming into it. I'm not sure why the prognosticators didn't recognize this fact. They love picking teams with bonafide aces.

The Mets should win this series handily. But if they split the first two games, the series becomes a best-of-5 with Carpenter facing Maine in Games 1 and 5. That's not a good situation for the boys in Shea. They should win the first two games -- and they better.

Didn't follow all this so this may have been said already but the reason I wasn't shocked by the Yankees loss (& was nervous going in, though not as nervous as I would have been against the Twins) is because the Tigers are like the Angels teams that keep beating the Yanks in two important ways.

1- The Yanks, when they were winning in the postseason did so because they worked counts & got the starters out early exposing the bullpen of the opponent, the weakest part of 90% of the teams in the league. That's why with the exception of Schilling & ironically Johnson & Beckett( & I gues now Rogers), they didn't get beat by starters. The Angels & Tigers both had bullpens stronger than their starters, nullifying the strength. Additionally, the priginal Angels & Tigers both had their best reliever working in the Rivera 1996 mode - not as the closer & able to be used when most needed rather than stupidly only in a save situation.

2- Both the Tigers & Angels were not OBP based teams (like them, & the As) but BA based teams. Generally the former is better, because walks don't slump (this is true unlike the silly cliche about speed not slumping, which is trumped by the truer cliche about not being able to steal 1st), and OBP offenses will generally be more consistent, but in a short series, consistency matters less than being hot at the right time, and if the BA team is hot, they can kill you, especially if your pitching isn't that good.

Oh, & Torre continued to show Arod-esque abilities to save his worst managing for the post-season.
