Domestically, I think LBJ was among the best presidents, one from the Deep South who turned a lot of the talk about bettering the lot of minorities into actual actions that have been the template for domestic policy to this day. In foreign policy, though, he pissed it all away in the Vietnam quagmire. Will be interesting to see which quagmire history treats worst: Vietnam, Iraq or Glen.

Agreed. But, of course, it will depend on who writes the history.
It would seem to me there's a long way to go to catch the Vietnam quagmire in terms of lives lost and its ramifications on American society.

Given today's tough economic news, increasing the chances for a GOP sweep next fall, I wonder if some adults who were sitting out might decide to get into the race now.

Given the poll last week that said some 20 percent of GOP voters would never vote for a Mormon, seems to me Bachmann might be sitting pretty and I can't believe the GOP leadership would be happy with that, would they?

Everything I read seems to indicate that Bachmann is running for the VP slot. I don't know if that's accurate/fair or just being dismissive of her candidacy because she's female. I think it will come down to Perry or Romney.

It's going to take a lot of heavy lifting on Perry's part this late in the game -- lifting that I'm not sure he's willing to give. He's starting from jump in both organization and funding.

Much of the tea party and social conservative constituencies which Perry caters to has seemingly coalesced around Bachmann at the moment. All Perry's entry into the race would do is ensure Romney wins the nomination by dividing those groups. And there's also still a lot of Texas fatigue in the electorate.

Perry's better off sitting tight and waiting for a VP call. A Romney-Perry ticket is probably the best the GOP could hope for.

I don't like Romney, but I agree 100 percent.

That's probably the strongest ticket the GOP could hope for in a general election, but I wonder if Perry would agree to it.
