Bob Neill, 2012 Olympics spokesman for the main opposition Conservative Party, was disparaging about Coe's optimism, despite him being a fellow Tory lawmaker.

"Lord Coe has described this logo as 'ambitious, interactive and youth-friendly'. I would describe it as hideous," he said.

"Questions need be answered as to how we have ended up in this situation. Was there an open competition to supply the designs? If so, what on earth do the rejected ones look like!

"We need to know how much money this exercise has cost, because whatever it was, it's been a complete waste of money."

Initial public reaction was also less than positive.

"This logo makes me embarrassed to be English," said a contributor called Clumbers on one online message site devoted to the logo, which was devoid of supporters of the chosen design.

"It looks like it could have been done by a six year old. I could do better with my eyes closed," added someone called Bige.

A poll by the BBC News website asked readers to give it a gold, silver or bronze medal, or a wooden spoon if they really didn't like it. Eighty three percent gave it a wooden spoon.

The budget for the 2012 Olympics has soared to 9.3 billion pounds, nearly four times more than the first projections of how much it would cost to stage the Games in London.

Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

"Each edition of the Olympic Games brings its own flavor and touch to what is now well over a century of modern Olympic history," Rogge said. "The brand launched today by London 2012 is, I believe, an early indication of the dynamism, modernity and inclusiveness with which London 2012 will leave its Olympic mark."

The cyan plate is missing.

At least Vancouver's looks better than this. That is not a logo, it looks more like a jigsaw puzzle ::)
It is not very original in thought. It seems like they didn't put a lot of time in putting this joke together.

You have to wonder if enough public pressure could possibly force the London organizing committee to change the logo.

I hope so because if the public lets this stand, that says a lot about Londoners (boring)

Or, more accurately, taste as opposed to boring.

Why the hell don't they use the 2012 logo they've been using. It's pretty sharp.

I'm pretty sure you have to change the original bid city logo after you earn the rights to host the event. The IOC might want to rethink that policy.
They could have added racing stripes... Yeah, and fins for air resistance.

And they got damn near $800,000 for something my 5-year-old could've come close to making. ****ing consultants.

This one wasn't too bad.

Ah yes, the Olympics that opened the world's eyes to the cha-ching possibilities of the Games, culminating, of course, in the Coca-Cola Olympics 12 years later.
L.A., I believe, is also where the chant U-S-A, U-S-A went from charming (Lake Placid, 1980) to obnoxious, kind of like "You da man" in golf about 15 years ago.

The London logo that ran in our paper today was red.

It looked like a cubist tampon.

What I don't get is why the London organizers felt they had to do something nutty. It's LONDON, fellas. One of the greatest cities in the world, with dignity and history just dripping right off the name! Why not go conventional, and tell everyone who thinks an Olympic logo should be what happens if a cubist takes mushrooms to go **** themselves??

Maybe I just dropped some acid but, is the second "2" in 2012 supposed to represent the island of England (and N. Ireland)? and the other numbers supposed to represent the rest of Great Britain?
The whole thing has a very "Flintstones" vibe to it.

Here I was thinking it was an acid-driven jumble of puzzle pieces. Now I see it was an idiot attempt at the numbers 2-0-1-2.

Even worse of a logo, thanks to that revelation.

That logo looks like Lisa Simpson performing a very explicit act, orally, of course.

This logo serves as fair warning that opening ceremonies will be over-the-top artsy-fartsy. Stand well clear when it is on the telly come 2012.

This Daily Mail article has some suggested replacements. The David Brent reference is fantastic.

Edit: Some idiot forgot the link.

They need to get KISS to play the opening ceremonies.
They ROCKED at the closing ceremonies in Salt Lake.
That was flipping sweet! Not out of place at all
.

This one's better.
