Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

Help Support Sports Journalists Forum:

I hate that. No wonder so many reporters make up the "man-on-the-street" quotes.

The worst-ever assignment that trickled down to me as a new sports reporter in Brevard County, Fla., the day of the Challenger explosion was to find Christy McAuliffe's elementary school class and get their reaction.

I was told they were staying at a hotel on the beach, but I never found them. Thank God.

Even the operater at the Space Center was upset and crying when I called to ask a few questions.

Back when I was just starting out as a writer one of our big high schools had a new coach whose son died while lifting weights during summer workouts. I had to write a combined news story/obit, which meant I was supposed to call the coach's home. Never have I been more relieved to be told "They're not taking any calls."

I admit that I love performing but feel little pull to attend the theatre. Much like porn I'd rather be doing than watching.

KYSW, you will always have your friends here at sj.com, and they can be a pretty tight supportive group despite the differences, bitching, trolling, etc.

I'll never forget my first year participating in Secret Santa and drawing your name.

Speaking of which, yo, Santa. About time for you to wake up!

... still write and send snail-mail letters. Part of it just to be a contrary, luddite type. The other part: I like starting a letter and seeing where my thoughts end up by the end of it. Even without any response or feedback (and I do get some), it's an enjoyable exercise.

Just don't ask about the neatness or legibility of my cursive/print hybrid ... :)

...have no idea what y'all are talking about when you're talking about overs, unders, pushes, etc. on the college football board. It's something to do with betting on the games, but I haven't a clue.

Those cookies were delicious, too.

There is a helluva difference between alone and lonely.

I know this, I just can't shake the feeling -- especially when I see a large chunk of my friends getting married and starting families and ****.

... am judgmental as hell and don't feel much like changing.

... double-checked my spelling of "judgmental" above after reading Buck's post.

I'm OK on that, but when you start dealing with pluses and minuses, I get lost.

Just heard Hold My Hand and realized Hootie says "peace and harmony" not "peas and hominy."

That's awesome. Wasn't trying to catch you up.
I think your post made me recall and argument with former EE.
That's how dumb I was. I was literally arguing in favor of the incorrect spelling, looked it up and felt like an idiot.

... Of my friends convinced me to see Norbit in the theater with him. He actually thought it was funny.

Crossing over with the "Feeling old" thread, my wife and I have been watching a lot of "Friends" reruns lately. There's an early episode where they go to a Hootie and the Blowfish concert, and every time I see it I realize that aired during my freshman year of college and that a freshman in college now wasn't even born when it aired.

......even having worked in the radio industry for over 10 years, I apparently don't know what the definition of "Classic Rock" is.
I just heard Black Crowes on a "Classic Rock" station.
