I fell down my stairs last night, and today, I'm hurt.
I'm not injured. Nothing is broken or torn. I'm just hurt.
I don't bounce the way I did 30 years ago.
I wasn't drunk. I wasn't doing anything stupid. I just slipped and busted my ass, and today, life sucks.
My feet flew out from under me. I hit and skidded down 3-4 steps before stopping. My entire right side from my shoulder to wrist to my rib cage to my hip to knee freakin hurts.
I haven't even told my wife I fell because I don't want to have some kind of lecture or conversation, but she has to know that something happened because I can't get up off the couch without grimacing.

I hate maneuvering my steps like an 85-year-old. But I'm more concerned with taking the one big fall that sticks with you for a long time. So if it's at home, in a stadium, anywhere, I cling to the railing. Tightly.

I hope you feel better real soon.

Thanks.
I had the rail.
What happened was I was going downstairs barefoot, and my feet just flew out from under me on the carpet. I had the rail with my left hand, and I guess that caused me to list and flip over onto my right side when I hit. And then I bounced. Repeatedly.
It wasn't like I took some major header and could have died. I just busted my butt.
I will say this: I haven't cried because of pain probably since the '70s. Right now if I allowed myself to do it, I could sit here and weep because I hurt so bad.
Again, I'm not injured. I walked 3 miles this morning. I hand washed my wife's car and my truck today. I'm just sore as crap.

And honestly, if I had been doing something ignorant or drunk, I would probably be just as sore, but at least I could point a finger as to why. This was nothing more than getting older and being a klutz.

Stuff happens, sir. Trying to be neither flip nor poetic ...

Grab onto railings. Minimize carpets and rugs to cut down on ... well ... stuff happening. Make sure footwear is on properly and is there to help you instead of being the culprit. It's that sort of stuff one thinks about when we don't bounce the next time.

Take care ...

One day at work last year I was walking outside our building, dropped something, and reached down to pick it up. When I lifted up, I cracked my head hard against a rail above me. I work in hospitality, and a guest saw and made some jokey comment. It hurt so goddam much that I came so very close to telling him exactly how he could **** right off, Mr. High and Mighty.

I managed to walk off seeing stars and get to my desk as my ears rang. I was so mad at myself. I do that. I get mad at myself when I stub my toe or trip or whatever.

This was that times a hundred. I was lucky I wasn't bleeding like hell. But I can still see that asshole's face. I hope daily he runs into walls.

Heck, if I wasn't in so much pain, I'd laugh at my own dumbassery.

Get well, my friend.

I’m almost 50 and have started feeling all of the creaks and cracks associated with the age.

I’m in pretty good physical shape, but the longer I go between workouts, the older I feel, so it’s a constant race to exercise and be sore from that instead of being sore from just being old.

If that makes sense.

My cousin asked me if I'd taken an ibuprofen or anthing. I said. I no, and then I popped a couple of Aleve. That has helped.

Last December, a month into being 49, I tried to make a quick break for the kitchen because the basketball game I was watching went into overtime (as if I don’t have a damn pause button).

I was wearing knockoff Crocs on a hardwood floor when my feet gave out from under me and I was like a drunk stumbling towards the corner of the room like a stock car headed towards the wall at Talladega. Hit the thing wrist first and crashed to the floor in a heap.

Broke my wrist, which I figured was a 50-50 possibility as soon as it happened. At the time I was between jobs and had no insurance, so I didn’t get it looked at until February. The ortho had a **** fit that I waited so long and confided in me later she didn’t expect the PT she prescribed to actually get me better. By the grace of God it did.

Long story short, get checked out. Your wife already knows you are a dumbass and loves you anyway.

I played nine holes Thursday evening and another nine on Friday. My back feels like it’s half-seized. Took a muscle relaxer on Saturday that helped (but left me much loopier than I would have thought) and then a prescription version of Aleve today which also helped. I’ll be flipping a coin as to which one I take before tomorrow’s five-hour flight.

Among other things, that's one that has made me feel my age - standing for a long while. I turn 50 in November, and standing for 3 hours for an opening band and then headliner at club shows makes my lower back and quads ache at Hour 2 and the all the next day.

Still doing my baseball throwing, though, and it's helped my core already. Did better standing through Sammy Rae and the Friends show Friday night. Noticeable difference.

Couple of things:

-- Things like Crocs or Oofos recovery sandals are great. I love them. But they have little traction, either on the sole or insole. Wet or sweaty = slippery. I can't wear Oofos outside in summer because my feet slip. Hit slick concrete like in our garage and they go out like skates on ice.

-- Hear me Roar makes a good point. Let the wife-spouse know what happened.

-- Voltaren cream is pretty dang skippy for strains-pains-muscle aches. Apply liberally.

Hey, I guess it sucks getting to the age where the doctor asks if you have fallen in the last however many months...

Wellllllllll
Last summer as I was going through a particularly trying time I self-medicated extensively at the country club pool and then busted my ass but good in the men's dressing room. Drunk as I was, and slippery as the floor was, I literally couldn't get back up (thankfully I at least had my boxers on). It took a lifeguard, two waiters and a cook to get my ass home. MommaQuant was not amused.

I was so "loose" that I came out of it all with nary a scratch (save for the $100 bills I was dispensing liberally to the staff the next morning), but the bill always comes due. At the doctor's the next week for a scheduled appointment, I had to cop to the fall. The young female nurse had a nice chuckle as she jotted down the story in my records.

Three months later, I was back for a follow-up.

"Any falls lately?"

"Oh no, the country club pool's been closed since August!"
