I heard on the radio this morning that it's a Category 5 right now out in the ocean. That's Andrew and Hugo size. That's major destruction. That's scary as ****.

I am not a weatherman or government official, just merely a guy on the internet giving advice. But if I lived anywhere south of I-4, I'd board up the house and get the hell out of town today.

Haven't heard too much about that town where Harvey made landfall. Rockport, or ford or something. Probably not much left of it.

I know the concern of Americans is America (that's not a shot—I get it), but there are some small islands, and low-lying sandbars like the Bahamas, that are about to get really ****ed. A lot of those tracks put Irma right on top of major tourist centres like Varadero, Cuba.

I stopped at the grocery store yesterday morning and there was one shopper stocking up on water. I stopped this morning around 9 am and all water and most bread was gone. Way more shoppers than normal. The checkout person told me there's no water at any of the Publix stores in town. There were short lines at the four gas stations I drove past (what left me shaking my head was the people in line for a car wash).

I don't live in an evacuation zone, not that I can figure out where one should evacuate to if I did. I have hurricane shutters (accordion shutters that I can close myself no problem), a whole house generator and the propane tank is close to full. As long as the roof stays on my house, the dogs and I will be fine should Irma come through my part of South Florida.

Lots of days left to worry and for changes in Irma's path.

The fact that so many of the models have it turning up toward the Carolinas and only a couple have it coming toward the Panhandle has me a little on edge. These storms never seem to take the path they predict four days out.

One of the brutal things about hurricane season, one area gets hammered - sucks up a lot of the public outpouring of support/tv coverage, and there is another big one right behind it. Nobody remembers Hurricane Rita - the fourth most intense Atlantic hurricane of all time because it came a month after Katrina - but Rita was actually a more intense hurricane. It's impact was lessened only due to the area it struck.

100% correct, and to add to that, the panic over Katrina just before was what led to the massive Rita exodus from Houston causing unprecedented road congestion and even multiple deaths due to the evacuation. I'm hoping that the reaction to Harvey doesn't provoke a similar incident(s) in fleeing Irma once its path is clearer.

Truth. My in-laws were affected by Rita. House completely flooded, they weren't able to go back to their home for 10 days. When they got there, they had lost everything. Had Rita hit a major metro area, the damage would have been catastrophic. Instead, it hit a sparsely-populated area.

Irma is registering on seismometers in the Caribbean used to detect earthquakes. That's pretty terrifying. If I l lived in Florida I think I'd be gassing up and heading to at least Nashville or somewhere else inland.

I saw something today about a star-studded Harvey telethon being put together and thought about Irma. It's sure looking like some shekels are going to be needed for Florida.
