Some great stuff here from Woody's former assistant. For those of you who aren't acquainted with George Chaump, he coached Navy and Marshall after Ohio State and before going back to his Pennsylvania high school roots. An offensive mind ahead of his time.

Chaump was the 1st great Marshall football coach. He's guy who put them on the map of 1-AA football and set the table for Donnan and Pruett.

After his Navy stint, he came back to the Harrisburg area with Central Dauphin HS, then was the first guy who could make Harrisburg High football work. And he was certainly one of those guys who could take his guys and beat yours, then turn around and take your guys and beat his.

1968: The year George Chaump saved Woody Hayes' job and gave Ohio State an unexpected national title

George Chaump did not save the job of Hayes. The Ohio State recruiting class of 1967 is among the greatest ever and was recognized as such at the time. Rex Kern was a tremendous quarterback for that offense. Jack Tatum and Jim Stillwagon were great defensive players. And they had a lot of help. In 1968 OSU went undefeated. They only ost the last game of the season in 1969 in Ann Arbor in a huge upset to blow a national title. In 1970 they only lost in the Rose Bowl.

The assistant who deserves credit is whoever recruited New York and New Jersey. They pulled a lot of talent out of there including John Brockington and Tatum.
