First thing I thought when I got this news. A lot of other great moments too:
His whole comically homophobic performance when they though three new patrons were gay (“I’ve seen you guys hug.” “Yeah, we hate it!”; “Ferns, Sammy, Ferns.”)
The bit in the “Woody’s Wedding” episode when he told Woody he wanted to give him something that he wished someone had give Norm on his wedding day, then asks Cliff to hold Woody as he drew back his arm to punch him.
The wrestling match with his high school rival
The episode when he was briefly hired as his company’s “hatchet man."

I’m glad Bumpy brought up his role in “Outside Providence.” I’d almost forgotten about that one.

My favorite Norm episode was when he got hired at the brewery and was surprised to get a check on Friday. "Sir, there is no way in good conscience I can accept this." And when he discover a flaw in one of the production lines "Well sir, I have something that a machine doesn't have. That's love."

The live Leno show that followed the last Cheers episode was great.

My wife was then a producer for the program Evening, a big magazine hit in the '80s that started in Boston. It was on at 7:30, before Cheers, so for the finale they went live from the location of the Leno finale. She reported all were hammered/high/both out of their minds for her program, long before Leno went live.

He was funny in the 80s horror spoof House....and as Fat Sam the Cajun (?) drug pusher in the classic journalism movie Fletch.

All I can think of is all the cartoons with the crowd yelling "Norm" from the other side of the pearly gates.

Paul Daugherty, the old Cincy Enquirer columnist, tells a story (IIRC) about how he went into a mostly empty San Francisco coffee shop and saw Wendt -- years after Cheers -- sitting alone with coffee and a paper. Daugherty can't help himself, gives a "NORM!" and Wendt frowns at him and walks out.

Wendt was only in his mid-40s when Cheers ended, I imagine as an actor wanting to keep working it had to be hard to shake that for a long time. But hopefully later in life he was able to enjoy the recognition and adulation. RIP, Mr. Peterson.

I've always thought John Goodman got a lot of roles that Wendt might have landed otherwise.
