Have me an 8-year-old GE Profile dryer. Started squeaking like crazy over the weekend, so I took the top off to see if I could get some grease down in there. Upon looking, I saw what appeared to be dryer lint sticking out. So I grab the pliers and pull -- only to pull out a three-foot-long piece of felt that is supposed to stay around the drum.

FML.

Re: FML - Rockbottom version

I figured you were going to pull out a possum or something. But this is probably just as financially unfortunate.

Re: FML - Rockbottom version

Hahahaha. Idiot me even shined a flashlight down there to inspect it, and thought FER SURE it was lint.

Yes. Now my options include: A) Trying to fix it myself; B) Paying the $90 service call + whatever to get it fixed; C) Buy a new/used dryer.

And I have all this grease now ...

Re: FML - Rockbottom version

Why would you need pliers to pull out dryer lint?

And I'm looking for used w/d right now. Sucks.

Re: FML - Rockbottom version

the best part is that you can get a new dryer pretty cheap.
as long as it isn't a name brand and you don't care if it doesn't match the washer.
When I bought mine it was around $150.

DO NOT TRY to fix it yourself.
Do. NOT.

Seriously, RB, you can spend $150-200 to get an 8-year-old dryer fixed (until something else breaks down) or spend that much to get a new one, like Jay says.

Re: FML - Rockbottom version

Your query is a sound one. I saw what looked awfully like lint (and this thing is FILLED with lint ...) that I couldn't quite reach. Hence the pliers.

Off to the appliance repair place to get schooled on how to fix it. It is 50-50 as to whether I end up buying a scratch-and-dent dryer after all this.

If the drum is squeaking, it's probably gonna give out all together before too much longer.

I haven't been able to find one listed online at any store for less than $449. I'd LOVE to know where you're shopping.

Re: FML - Rockbottom version

Similar one to ours is $398 at Lowe's. I am hoping for s-d to make it cheaper.

Can get decent electric dryers at Home Deppot or Best Buy, to name two, for $250...maybe less if on sale

Re: FML - Rockbottom version

And yeah, between this and my laptop (/crossthread!), I am having a sub-par hard goods week.

The latter is getting its hard drive AND one-piece keyboard/speaker rig replaced tomorrow. At least Dell is picking up the tab on that one ...

You're right. It is about $250. The washers were $450.

And $250 still ain't $150. :D

Re: FML - Rockbottom version

I think mine was a floor display model, and that it made it a little bit cheaper.
And it isn't a name brand and it is very bare bones model.
But it was cheap. And that was the important thing at the time.

Re: FML - Rockbottom version

I had tire blowout on the highway Saturday.
I bought a new Boss RC-2 pedal, but when I got back home my Boss PH-3 wasn't working for some reason.
Still had fun the the RC-2, which is amazing, but not as much fun as I would have if the phaser was working.

And, come to think of it, it's just a clothesline stretched out across the backyard .... ;)

Re: FML - Rockbottom version

UPDATE: I am just a redundant class away from being a DRYER REPAIR EXPERT!!!

OK, I got a *smidge* of assistance, via going into the appliance parts place here in Podunk and talking through with them what the issue was ... but I was able to take apart my dryer, re-install the felt I accidentally yanked out, establish what was causing the squeaking (it was two little hard-plastic guides that had worn away. Replacement cost: $9.55 per), vacuum out eight years worth of stored-up lint all through it, replace the vent sleeve, and get it back running.

So I spent $19.10, and a couple hours of my time (of which it is copious right now ...) to do what *would* have cost me easily in the triple digits!

Woo hoo!!!
