Man that movie captured my HS (1981 grad) experience almost spot on, well 5 yrs earlier. We even had a spot near the edge of the parking lot for the "burnouts" who fired up the cancer sticks between periods and during lunch.

Imagine kid from Chinese immigrant parents trying to fit into that school.

It was a Friday, so my mom was working at the hospital and I was a week and a half away from ending (I think) third grade.

I grew up in a Midwestern university town, and I never perceived D&C to be a "Texas" film in anything more than coincidence: the single reference to "buying tickets in Houston," and the fact the school's mascot was the "Lee Rebels," which could only be true in the South.

Otherwise it could have taken place in any reasonably middle clsss suburb pretty much anywhere.

If I were going to do a modernized Dazed and Confused I'd set it in the summer of 1994. OJ chase, oppressively hot, Cobain's suicide, beginning of the Clinton years after years of stodgy old men, still had a decent cross mix of alternative grunge, R&B, rap. Etc. Oh and we still all hung out and had parties and cared about having a nice looking car.
