I feel very comfortable in the fact that I don't know what Crimea is.

I don't doubt for a second that you're comfortable in your ignorance.

Yes, by all means, you two sip a latte and congratulate yourselves. And IJAG ... I had that title taken from you long ago. :)

How was that rousing season of sports journalism Sheep, Mystery Meat II? Rick Reilly for every answer, right?

I am excited for the return of The Odd Couple. The TV thread hasn't been the same since Sports Night got canned.

Ahem ...

We're not entitled to talk politics here just because we want to. Technically, you could say the same about all the goofy crap on Anything Goes. Difference being is that threads on pooping properly don't routinely turn into total ****shows, whereas politics ones almost always do.

Look, I've got no personal beef with politics threads. Hell, I post on 4chan's various boards; ain't nothing you guys can do can phase me. But there's a track record of **** going south in a hurry whenever politics rears its head, be it in an election-pegged thread or a containment board.

Again, just because people WANT to do something doesn't mean they have the RIGHT to. There's plenty of places to talk politics on the Internet.

If you post on 4Chan, you know that **** never really devolves too much here, not by the standards of the Internet at large.

It's true. We get some extended back-and-forths, and Baron will obsess about George Bush, while Starman melts down, but it rarely gets personal, or vulgar.

Of course not. But it's also a matter of context. I've been on boards where even a whiff of off-topic gets your post striken and some form of punishment meted. I never stay long at those places, but I'm sure there's a community that appreciates that narrow focus.

I'm not a moderator because I'd suck at it and have no desire to work for free just to regulate posters' temper-tantrums (I moderate comments occasionally on our paper's website, and that's plenty draining enough, and that's actually part of a paying job). I doubt that the "no politics" edict is arbitrary.

Then why can't we get some transparency at least? If you're creating boundaries, it helps to mark them clearly.

Explain what "going South" means and why it would necessitate a thread being locked or deleted.

Personal attacks, attempted and accomplished outing, for starters. I have pretty thick skin, so I'm not especially troubled by it, but that's the sort of thing that reflects poorly on what I presume is intended to be a website for professionals. "At least it's not 4chan bad" isn't much of a standard in that context.

I don't like deleting 80 percent of the comments on my paper's site, but that's only because they don't offend my personal tastes. But it's not about me.

The only particularly reprehensible action here is outing, and to my knowledge that hasn't been an issue in a while. I'm all for lifetime bans for that.

If you are unwilling to kick the kids out of the classroom for threatening to out, trying to out, making threats and other general contemptible behavior because of how you play with a toy, the only thing left to do is take the toy away.

As always, there's little reason to lock or delete threads. If you don't want to read a thread or post on it, nobody is forcing anyone. It's the whiny little ******* who complain to moderators who get threads locked. My guess is the mods just get tired of dealing with some of you. But it's ridiculous that we can't discuss stuff like Crimea.

Why is it ridiculous? It's a sports journalism message board, not a geopolitics board.

I mean, I get *wanting* to talk about it, but politics isn't part of the site's mission.

Maybe if we brought back NewsJournalists.com?

I never understood why political discussions bother members who have no interest in them. The 3 most
popular topic categories-- Sports and News, Anything Goes and Journalism each have 25 topics on
first page along. The political topics are clear. If you don't want to get involved why click on them?
Would also add that if your highly sensitive you should not click on them either.

Stick to wishing death on the world's entire homosexual population and you'll be sound as a pound.

While we're all here, I mostly chose to play a character on this site ... a f'kin character.
I am saddened I need to spell that out.
Still, if you have bones to pick with FART, send me your phone number and we'll talk.
NO BULL**** OVER THE PMs.
I have made nice with a few of my former nemeses.
Maybe we'll even walk away friends! That is how life is.
But if you hate FART, please, get over yourselves.

Not sure why you would choose to play a character that many people don't seem to like. But if that's what entertains FART, more power to FART.

I just don't take this very seriously.
I realize that's not a philosophy many people here want to accept.
I am as real, in real life, as any guy or gal here.
So stop persecuting me.

I often find Fart entertaining. When he's not in a pissing match. But others don't seem to enjoy the character. Just an observation.

Thank you, kind sir.
And I yours, even if we don't agree on multimedia.
See how that works there, kiddos? Amity despite difference?
I'd buy a steak and drinks for any of you dingleberries.
Send me a message and it is done.
We are all brothers, and of like mind, as much as we resist it.

- Despite the made-up name, I'm as real here as I am outside SportsJournalists.com. Hell, you can google Spike Chiquet if you want to know my real name...my name and my radio name are pretty interchangeable.

-I'm glad MMII used my pooping thread as an example. Brings a tear to my eye.

- What is this 4Chan? I must go look.
