This is just a woman's perspective here, so what do I know? But I've always thought it a bit weird that there are never (it seems) any "walls" on the sides of men's urinals, so that there are, like in wormen's public restrooms, at least a semblance of stalls. OK, so there aren't any doors? Fine, but to have literally NO privacy/personalized space? I've always thought that strange, and frankly, bad.
Hey, boys, who’s going to tell her that in some bars they fill the urinals with crushed ice to pee into?

I lived in abject fear for 150 or so days as a high school freshman that I'd accidentally pop wood during gym class or God forbid immediately afterward. The other 30 days were film strip days or what not and filled with pure relief.
Fun fact: I never once showered at school after PE or after athletic contests. We had a perfectly nice bathroom at home I would use when I arrived. Fortunately I inherited my dad's genes that meant my sweat wasn't the odoriferous kind that most teen boys suffer from.

The pool at my old high school had no windows. Our swimming classes were conducted in the buff until 10th grade or so. That ended when we moved to a new school that had windows around the pool.

I think male gang showers are a leftover from the military, which almost every adult male in the post WWII era had served in. I began elementary school in the fall of 1960, all of my gym teachers acted like drill sergeants.

I distinctly remember the Nixon-Kennedy debates, the 1960 election, the 1961 Reds-Yankees series, the Milwaukee Braves and the KC Athletics.

Gym class was either the last class of the day or next-to-last class of the day but there was no getting out of the communal shower. I'll never forget the football coach gathering us all at orientation and yelling "For many of you this will be your only shower of the day!" So what if it was? :D

At my junior high, I don't remember the showers, so much as the sandpaper towels smelled awful -- like they just put them in the dryer but didn't wash them.
But I do remember the big building. On one side was the boys locker room, the gym was in the middle and the girls locker room was on the other side. It didn't take long for somebody to figure out that there were about 6 doors lined up in such a way so if ALL of the doors were open, you could see directly from the boys locker room to the girls locker room.

My high school gym locker room had showers....but they didn't work. We never got time to use them anyhow....just time for a quick change of clothes before the next class.

Wait, what the actual ****?
Years into adulthood, my brothers and I started talking about how insane it was that all the boys swam in the buff at the YMCA after soccer or basketball practice. The coaches or counselors were around and maybe even swam, too. I have no recollection of anything bad happening, but it's still ****ed up.

Or when the urinals/stalls are all taken and the sinks get enlisted as backups.

Back at the old Vet Stadium in Philly, getting peed on was often the penalty for those who got too drunk and passed out on the concourse.

Troughs are the norms at English football stadiums. And some classier pubs, too. Went to one near Waverly in Edinburgh and was a little surprised a high-class joint like that had a trough.

When I was in 6th grade, I stayed after school for some activity. My friend and I decided to take a peek into the boys’ bathroom because neither of us had ever been in one. The hallway was deserted so we went in for about 15 seconds. As we walked out, a guy who later became one of my close friends came walking down the hall and said, “interesting, isn’t it?” To this day, when I take a quick look into any room, that’s what I think of.

We had to take showers after junior high PE class. At our school, a teacher would watch boys leaving the shower and mark it on a role sheet. If you didn’t take a certain number of showers, it affected your grade.

You can tell how people grew up in an LA Fitness locker room. 75-plus guys who were in the military will walk around naked, even stand at a mirror naked to shave or groom.

Guys like me who grew up in the 70s will wear a towel, but shamelessly drop it to change into a bathing suit.

Younger guys will squirm and squeeze themselves into a corner if they have to change in fear that someone will see their privates. They are the same guys who go to the corner urinal and stand sideways hoping that no looks their way.

As long as we’re on the subject, I get really annoyed when people loudly bust ass at the urinal. Ditto for the sigh/grunt of relief they let out afterward.
