Coming to NYC

I'll be in NYC from Saturday through Tuesday. I'm there for some college journalism seminar thing, but I plan on making plenty of time for drinks and such. If anyone is interested in joining me for a few frosty beverages, let me know.

Along those lines, it's been a few years since I've been to NYC. I'm looking for a good sports bar to watch the selection show on Sunday. Speaking of, I have Knicks tickets for Sunday's game, but the game tips at the same time as the selection show. I'm torn. I've never been to the Garden, so I definitely want to go, but I also want to see the selection show to find out where Mason lands. Any suggestions? Does the Garden have any kind of sports bar inside, or am I going to have to pick one or the other?

Ryan, I think there is a bar in the Garden, but I have never actually visited it and it might only be open to people with certain tickets. But you should investigate, because I am 99 percent sure it exists. If you have to choose, not sure what I would advise... The Garden is the Garden, but the Knicks are dismal. There is very little energy left in the building most games, so I am not sure you will be getting the good experience. That said, nothing from the selection show is going to change if you just read the brackets after the fact. Why is seeing the show so important?

There are numerous bars in the Garden for Knicks and Rangers games. I know this because my son is the last remaining defender of Isiah Thomas. Outside the Garden and within close proximity are several dozen pubs where you can quench your thirst at a far more reasonable price. Best deal for me at the Garden is the upscale beer stands where they pour nicer beers into plastic mugs and give away tasty (everything is relative) pretzels that fit into the hollow mug handle for ease of carriage. Ladies and gentleman, the Dolans!

You're right. This shouldn't even be a question. I should just enjoy my first trip to the Garden and worry about the brackets later. What I may do is catch the selection show inside the Garden if I can and at least watch the second half from my seats (or better seats if the place clears out by halftime). Thanks for the info.

Because it's the perfect way to top off a New York City day after fishing in a quiet stream and watching a dirt track race.

I would say the BBQ is incidental to the ACC-obsessed crowd. The BBQ is great by NYC standards, superior to Virgil's, IMO, but I've certainly had better in the Carolinas. My gold standard would be Henry's Smokehouse in Greenville, S.C. But I don't think you'll find a better place to watch the selection show. It's insane.
