my 5000th post was the bedding of the girlfriend formerly known as the Virgin.
top that, *****!

Jay, she wasn't reading. 8)

Wait, Mrs. Lono isn't a fictional character and actually reads and posts here?
Well, I'll be damned and pardon my language.

Well, now I'm just pissed at how crappy my life is compared to yours. Thanks a LOT, lono!!!

(love you)

With all due respect to Jay, this isn’t about competition.

My hat’s off to you for recounting the bedding the GFFKATV with No. 5000. Props to you, my brother.

But I’m old enough and cantankerous enough that I care about how I measure up to my own expectations, not how I stack up relative to my peers.

I don’t mean to sound like an elitist saying that, but it’s true. I’ve been through too much **** in my own life to engage in a game of “can you top this?”

I’ve been remarkably fortunate.

At various times, I’ve watched the sun set at the Moana Surfrider, driven 155 miles per hour on I-10 on the way to Los Angeles, run through the rain holding hands with Mrs. Lono in Venice, argued politics with the Swiss, and gotten to cover some amazing sporting events, with athletes from Tiger Woods and Jeff Gordon to Aaron Pryor and Boom-Boom Mancini. I’ve gotten to play with secret CIA skunkworks weapons, fly in stunt planes and combat jets, and in general raise more hell than any man has a right to.

Along the way, I’ve managed to stay mostly happily married for a quarter of a century to the most tolerant woman I’ve ever known, someone who doesn’t bat an eye at my misadventures, ranging from Brazilian lap dancers to redheaded interns and brokenhearted ex-girlfriends who can’t quite let go. And, yeah, I had two women with their hand on my **** at the same time one lost night in Luxembourg. ****ing sue me.

And I’ve also known tragedy most people can’t even imagine, from dealing with homicides and heroin, to autism and ADHD. My face carries a couple of hundred scars from reconstructive plastic surgery, my psyche more damage than most folks could know.

I buried a sibling and one of my parents, with another one dying. I’ve also survived being on airplanes when the landing gear failed and lightning struck.

My body of work has stood the test of time in my career.

But at the end of the day, it’s not about any of that. It’s about getting up every day and doing your best with your life. And that’s what I try to do: Bring it every single day of my life.

And my thanks to so many of you is to appreciate you for being here. And my challenge to everyone is to do likewise, to live every single day wide ****ing open.

‘Cause the clock is running on each of us. No time to slow down, no time to waste. Just put the ****ing hammer down. Today and forever.

It's late, I'm tired and half drunk. But you know, it is what it is.

So thanks for the encouragement and the shared/collective insanity. It means more to me than you know.
