I have no idea how I stumbled upon this, but someone created a free version of nerdy board game classic Axis & Allies for download.

The Axis & Allies folks presumably forced them to remove direct references to the game from this download, but its the same game.

There's several alternate "maps" that come with it, including a World War I game this WWI buff is looking forward to giving a try. One of the maps is a super-detailed version of the default Axis & Allies map which would also be cool.

I played the **** out of Axis & Allies when I was younger and when I was in college. They've since changed the board to break up some of the larger territories, and even added a few countries to the game (China, Italy), which is a good thing.

Start a land war in Asia and fly your nerd flag high!

Awesome, Bubbler! I can't play yet since I obv can't install software on the work computer. Another great site for nerds is www.conquerclub.com. It's an online Risk game (with no affiliation to Hasbro) that has well over 100 maps that you play risk on. It's quickly become something I go to every day.

Here's a fantastic one with a fantasy bent. It's essentially a turn-based strategy game, but the campaigns take on the feel of an RPG because it becomes very important to develop and keep experienced units:

This made me think of the English soccer chant when they play France. ... "If it wasn't for the English, you'd be Krauts. ..." (sung to the theme of "If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands. ...")

I might be in my 1918 nadir as the Central Powers. Austria is down to three territories, though I just shoved the Italians back a bit. Russia has 47 artillery units on Germany's doorstep and are in a position to roll my German ass.

On the other hand, I have the Ottoman Empire deep into the Balkans to relieve pressure on the Austrians, the Turks control Cairo and most of the Arabian peninsula. While I'm taking a beating on the eastern front, Germany has France in peril on the western front and I control most of the north Atlantic sea lanes, thus making America totally useless.

If I general it up right, I might pull it out. I also promised Mexico some territory if they invade the U.S. [/ZimmermanTelegramhumor!]
