I'm sure Pat's reporting is correct, but don't these racing businesses see they're in an industry in near-fatal crisis and that the need for cooperation for the good of all is dire indeed?
Already battling NBA and NHL playoffs and if they go Memorial Day weekend, the greatest spectacle in racing.

Sovereignty jokey Junior Alvarado fine $62,000 for using the crop 8 times down the stretch. The limit is 6. How in the world do they expect a jockey to keep track of the number of times he whipped a horse on the butt in the heat of battle? Had it been 10, Sovereignty would be DQd.
That's all a little extreme, I think.

Eh, I get the idea. But let's remember that these athletes aren't exactly signing consent forms to compete.

As ridiculous as it may sound for a Kentucky Derby winner to get DQed for too many whippings, I'd argue that it'd look even worse if a horse won while his jockey was fanatically flailing on him. There has to be limits, and severe consequences.

Spectacle is Sunday. Horses are Saturday. NBA/NHL is a two-month slog that isn't worth trying to avoid.

I agree!

I'd like to know what Bobby Knight and Calbert Cheaney would have thought about this.

And they're off

I still don't have a read on this. I want to make bets, but the info just isn't there for me yet.
It's got feel of an claiming race.
