He doesn't have a prayer, but between "Killer Joe" and "Magic Mike," Matthew McConaughey should win a new category: Coolest Actor of the Year.

Two outstanding performances in two highly entertaining films from this year that will unfortunately be forgotten too soon.

I doubt "Magic Mike" will be "forgotten too soon" if the Facebook feeds of the horny 40-year-old women I went to high school with are any indication.

Ha, that's true. My wife told me that her Facebook feed was absolutely lit up with excited posts about it when it was in theaters.

I really liked it. I thought it was very entertaining. At heart, it's really a business movie, kind of like "The Social Network" was more of a business/legal thriller than "The Facebook Movie."

I think that "Magic Mike" could have been even better without the forced love interest story. But know your audience, I guess.

Django might get nominated since they expanded the nomination pool, but in the old five-movie nomination format, I'd be against nominating it. Uneven.

Not as badly as he'd lose to DDL for Best Actor. That's a foregone conclusion.

Yeah, there's no question Day Lewis is going to win Best Actor. The other nominees don't have to worry about writing speeches...

I don't get why people think Tommy Lee Jones is so great in Lincoln. I love Tommy Lee Jones, but he almost always seems to play the exact same character. He's very good at playing ornery. I agree that Stratharian (sp?) was better than Jones.

One thing we always overlook on this thread every year is how the PR campaign plays out. That's the reason Crash won best picture and Shakespeare in Love won (although I stand by my belief that SPR is extemely overrated) and numerous acting awards swung one way or another.

I still think the will be a little reluctance to give DDL a third trophy for best actor. Maybe it will be just a blip, but soon you'll see stories in the entertainment media floated by agents and PR types and studio execs about a "darkhorse" candidate emerging or some **** like that. In the "Good Will Hunting" oral history, Damon talked about how another studio tried to push rumors that he and Affleck didn't actually write the script in the months leading up to the Oscars because they wanted their screenplay to win.

The PR war has just begun.

I think Daniel Day-Lewis will get a pass from the PR machine... It's not like there's a performance that people are saying, "Well, this guy is a close second..."

I think the other actors love how Day-Lewis is so picky about what roles he takes and how seriously he takes himself... Being linked to Spielberg won't hurt either...

Who knows? I've read that people didn't vote for Cruise for Born on the 4th because they didn't want him to win so early in his career before he paid his dues... Supposedly people didn't vote for Eddie Murphy because they were embarrassed by all of the Norbit ads that were all over TV as people were voting...

What does "Nominees to be determined" mean in this instance? They have to figure out who would get the trophy, I guess, but how is that done in this category?

Yup. Bigelow being snubbed is pretty awful too. I know she's already won, but that just shocked me.

The only two best picture nods I've seen are Lincoln and Les Miz, though I did want to see Silver Linings Playbook and Argo, but never had the time. (I don't do blood so I hear Django would not be the movie for me.)

I've always found that I've seen more of the animated nominated movies than the regular ones. Brave will probably win, just because the studio had to push back production a year in order to develop the technology for Merida's hair. Oh, and it's a great story and Pixar does it again. The only one that I could see challenging was Wreck-It Ralph, which I also thought was good.

If you haven't seen Paperman, which is nominated for best animated short, you should really try to find it somewhere. It is excellent.

Some real surprises in the directing category it seems. I thought Bigelow, Affleck and Tarantino would get strong looks. Surprised to see none of them on there. I have no idea what Amour is but I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see it up for so much.

Male Supporting Actor nomination list is as strong a list as I can remember for any catagory. Isn't everyone a prior winner?

Female supprting list is also very strong.

I guess I need to see The Master.

Quvenzhané Wallis for Beasts of the Southern Wild is that a WTF nomination. Never even heard of it. 9

The Bigelow snub especially is pretty stunning. Wonder if it's some type of backlash to the controversy (torture, CIA leaks, etc.).
