Oscars 2025 Thread

I mean, I really don't have any interest in watching the Oscars no matter who hosts. The thing should be a press release.

But Conan would make me more interested than most of the other possibilities.

Anora won big as the “plucky independent movie of the year” thing. Sean Baker endeared himself to the community advocating for theater releases; the irony is, I’ve seen four of his movies - only Anora in the theater - and not one of them requires a theater experience or even unusually enhanced by it. (The opening half of Anora is pretty risqué for a lot of audiences, to be frank.)

There was probably a sweet spot moment for awards culture consistently dovetailing with the best cinema of the year; we’re past it. The Dune movies are legitimately different and daring, done on a massive canvas, and it just garners a handful of down the line statues. Conclave is impeccably made and acted, gets a screenplay award.

I like Anora. It’s better than Birdman and CODA. People will remember none of them.

Curious how the "two-part" movie thing works when it comes to the Oscars. Take Wicked. Ok, production design and costumes were great, but can you honor something twice? It wasn't like it was a sequel - it was one production, the same people, the same sets, and I assume largely the same costumes in both parts.

Dune 2 got honored twice in a category or two.

At any rate, yes.

Total guess, but I think it probably hurt the movie/individual acting awards slightly, if that ever was an option. I think that Wicked won’t win for the same categories it already won for last night.

Lord of the Rings trilogy was shot together and won Visual Effects for each of the pictures.

Looked up how The Lord of the Rings series was honored in three subsequent Oscars. It won at least once, in every category it was nominated in over the three films, but never an acting award.

Must have sucked for those film people who knew they had an Oscar-worthy film due to be released against The Return of the King.

Watching the In Memoriam, I hadn't realized Will Jennings died. Talk about a broad career, writing hits for everyone from Barry Manilow to Jimmy Buffett to Mariah Carey, Dionne Warwick, Steve Winwood and oh yeah, TWO Oscars for best song with Up Where We Belong and a little ditty "My Heart Will Go On."

So a revival of Glengarry Glen Ross is hitting Broadway tomorrow. With a cast of Michael McKean, Bill Burr, Bob Odenkirk and Kieran Culkin, I had a hard time figuring out who was playing which four roles of the salesmen and it surprised me. Granted, I only saw the movie which has the scene with Baldwin, that the play does not - but still. The Better Call Saul reunion is a nice touch. You can add Burr for a "greater BB universe" reunion.

I did a quick search and came up empty. Who plays Blake (Baldwin)?
I assume Mitch and Murray again play themselves.

There is no Blake in the play. Baldwin was ready to be Roma, but Pacino was able to get an opening in his schedule to do the film. Mamet was so impressed with Baldwin, he wrote the Blake part for him. Imagine playgoers wondering what happened during the intermission.

Wow! Not much surprises me anymore but this has left me gobsmacked. I’m glad I’m not running ABC’s advertising sales department.

Not quite if the Masters left CBS for Amazon full time (Amazon gets two hours on Thursday and Friday in 2026), but it's one of those long-standing things (ABC has had the Oscars continuously since 1976 and all but five years since 1961).
