Just back from Zero Dark Thirty.

Jessica Chastain MUST win the best actress Oscar. MUST. She's so much stronger than Jennifer Lawrence it's not even close.

The movie was very, very well done. I finished the year with Argo and Life of Pi neck-and-neck for my favorite; oddly enough, now it's Life of Pi, hands down. Why? Because ZDT showed that an excellent filmmaker using an inventive script and strong cast can turn a rather procedural historical event into a seat-of-the-pants drama. That's what Argo is -- and it's also what ZDT is.

So, my personal faves for 2012:

4. Les Miz
5. Prometheus

Yes, I really liked Prometheus, but I'm not much into big Sci-Fi movies so the flaws that bothered the fanboys went right over my head.

Funny enough Richard Roeper put it in his top 10 movies of the year and got a raft of **** from hundreds of e-mailers and Twitter folks.

How graphic and gory is Zero Dark Thirty? I have a queasy stomach with violence and gore (hence why I won't be seeing Django Unchained anytime soon) but I want to see it.

Watched the Globes - and though I haven't seen any of the big contenders, I think this group of films (Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, Django, Argo and Les Miserables, throw in Moonrise Kingdom, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Silver Linings Playbook) might be the best group of movies to come down the pike in a number of years with as many as five or six movies that might have won a Best Picture in another year.

It's not. Django is VERY, but ZDT is not very bloody.

Yeah, even the torture scenes at the beginning are not especially graphic. Nothing close to George Clooney getting his fingernails ripped out in "Syriana."

It will be interesting to see if the Golden Globes are a good indication that Argo or Les Miz will beat Lincoln. I think films are far better than Lincoln was...

The race I think will be the most competitive will be best actress between Chastain and Lawrence. I think both were tremendous, and I think Lawrence will win, but I would vote for Chastain.

So just woke up from a three hour nap after working 25 straight hours on the Golden Globes. Get to do it again for the SAGS and then again for the Oscars (btw, didja know it's now officially "The Oscars?" The Academy has asked that they stop being referred to as The Academy Awards. I'm kinda bummed by that because it made for easy copywriting to be able to go from Academy Awards to Oscars and back again. Anyway...)

...the talk in Hollywood was that Jennifer Lawrence did herself no favors by making a lame joke at Meryl's expense; sure, she was referencing a movie line, and sure she's said many times that Meryl is her hero. But sometimes people can be too clever for their own good.

Plus, everyone who meets Jessica Chastain loves Jessica Chastain (or so I'm told; I haven't met her) and they know she's paid her dues.

I'm wondering how much influence Bill Clinton had on Oscar voters...he may have really helped Lincoln's cause.

She's my age, according to IMDB, and she definitely did come out of nowhere. She was in some TV shows for a few episodes here and there, but was just a dime-a-dozen working actress for a long time. Then, all of a sudden, in 2011, she's in "Tree of Life," "The Help," "Take Shelter," and "The Debt." Then "Zero Dark Thirty" this year. I'd love to know the gory details of how someone like that blows up, but she's too old and too under the radar, pop culture-wise, for a magazine like "Rolling Stone" or "Esquire" to give her the full takeout treatment. Maybe "The New Yorker" will, at some point.
