Coughlin is a SU alum, was successful at BC and his rah-rah crap might work with college players.

As you said, Patchs, it worked well at BC.

Granted, that was 15 years ago. Still, would've liked to seen him stay there for five more years. Really think they had something there.

Syracuse's problems in Jersey probably have more to do with Greg Schiano than anything else.
Rutgers' success is definitely a factor, but SU's problems down there started pre-Schiano.

One other factor is that they had a hard time recruiting QBs while McNabb was there. No one wanted to come in and sit for 2-3 years. The pool of QBs capable of running the freeze-option package was already small and shrank quickly. SU chose poorly when picking through the junk yard at that position.

Don't discount the rise of UConn football. I would say 30 or more kids on their roster are from New Jersey, suburban/upstate New York or eastern Pennsylvania, which 15 years ago, was Syracuse territory. If you have a D-I athlete and you show him Syracuse, then Storrs, and throw in the fact that the stadium is brand new, and you have brand new oncampus facilities, I think he is going to chose Connecticut.

Randy Edsall was one of **** MacPherson's best recruiters at Syracuse. When Mac left and Pasqualoni got the job, Edsall knew he couldn't work for a tyrant and pulled the rip cord. Assuming Coughlin's asking price will be too high, I wonder if Edsall would leave UConn to return to Syracuse after the AD whacks G-Rob on Thanksgiving weekend.

That's why Gross is building new facilities and raising money like it's going out of style. He's going to have to hire a "big name" coach if Robinson doesn't cut it.
If Coughlin gets canned from the Giants after this season, what other NFL team would hire him?
Makes sense to go back to college and get the biggest buck he can.
Or maybe Joe Pa finally steps down and Penn State goes after him?

Tom Bradley and Greg Schiano would be the guys I'd see Penn State chasing, not Coughlin.

I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that he was a candidate while in the Robinson search as well, but pulled his name out. I might be making that up, but I'm almost certain that was the case.

The best part of that whole deal was that Pasqualoni was mediocre - 6-6, I think - when he was fired, as the administration was worried that the program was going downhill. One win and 13 losses in the Big East later, it looks like it happened anyway.

At least the uniforms go with the fall season ;) ;D

I am a Syracuse basketball fan and have been since the early 1990's. The years I enjoyed the most were when Derrick Coleman and Rony Seikaly played for the Orange. Following Andrew Rautins right now.

However, the football team is another story.

Sorry sweetie, Rautins is out for the year, playing for your stupid national team. ;D

I guess the Carousel Mall isn't quite the attraction it used to be.

I beg your pardon. I'm quite happy with it. Great Borders store, Coach, H&M -- and it's about to get about four times bigger (thank you Destiny USA).

Back on topic. The Orangemen (I refuse just Orange) have been struggling for quite some time now. It's hard to believe that they would've won the Big East a couple of years ago if they didn't lose to Temple.

I'm not quite ready to dismiss Robinson as a coach yet, but I do have a problem with his happy-go-lucky attitude. One of the best coaches in our area said it best when he told me that any coach that just wants to have fun isn't doing his job.

The recruiting needs to get better fast.

BTW, **** DOUCHEBAG GROSS. Total ****ing tool.

I looked for this thread Saturday morning, knowing it was coming from somewhere; how come I couldn't find it?

Syracuse: uniforms better looking than Texas', football better than Michigan's. What are you whining about?

Recruiting recruiting recruiting...

Syracuse has to start with getting the local kids. Brain Leonard told them to go **** themselves when they withdrew his brothers scholarship due to a knee injury. Others such as Mike Hart and Greg Paulus and his brother Mike they had no shot at. JoLonn Dunbar of B.C. wanted to play at SU until Pasqualoni insisted he play HB. He goes to Boston College and becomes one of the sickest linebackers in the country. This year will be the most critical for G-Rob and Cuse. There are 7 or 8 kids within an hours drive that will play Div. I. All of theese kids are being recruited by bigtime schools (ND, USC, Michigan, Florida etc.). If Syracuse wants to get back to respectability, they have to start on their home turf.

Ray Rice probably wasn't going to go to SU anyway. There was some wierdness surrounding that whole thing that didn't involve Coach P. getting canned. I don't think will we ever know what really happened.

They also have had bad luck with injuries. They landed this kid Jermaine Pierce who was going to be a stud a LB, gets on campus as a frosh this year, and they find out he has a medical condition that will never allow him to play football again. The good thing, if there can be one, is Syracuse is still honoring his scholarship for all four years. Many programs out there would not do that.

UConn locked up Edsall with a fat contract extension after P was canned. They knew Edsall would probably be SU's top choice.

TSP, I'm not sure what Dome you're going to, but I'm always freezing my ass of at the Dome. Just because the stadium is owned by Carrier doesn't mean they have to air condition it in the middle of winter.

so what team are you going to watch play there? you can't seriously telling us you're going to watch JB's alma mater.

It is getting UGLY on the syracuse.com su football forum.
The fans actually wish for the days of Paul Pasqualoni.
That's how bad it is.
And SU's AD?
He's at the US Open.
Tell ya one thing, you'd never see Jake Crouthamel at a tennis tournament instead of a football game.

If it's as bad as I've seen tonight, Greg Robinson ain't gonna be around long.

The other problem is that the school doesn't know whether it wants a real football team...and as we know, that means a little thuggery from the players.

The basketball program figured that out a long time ago.

No wonder Syracuse chickened out of playing at Wyoming in 2009. They are truly pitiful and this is one NYS ex-pat who loves every minute of it. I hope UB kicks their butts.

They've got Buffalo at home, Miami of Ohio away and Connecticut away. Those are the only three games they have even a prayer of winning, and I don't like their chances in either road game. It's damn difficult to go winless in a major conference, but I think the Orange just might manage.

OK, they have Illinois at home next week. Still.

Ron Zook is going to make Greg Robinson look like a deer in the headlights. And Zook always look like a guy who looks like a deer in the headlights.

Iowa manhandled them and did it in a workman-like manner: no ****ing frills as they are known to do. I like Christensen behind center, as long as the o-line doesn't have anyone go down with an injury.

'Cuse should be calling **** MacPherson to come back and coach this team.

The Big East called and wants to know if the ACC still wants the 'Cuse?

I said this two weeks ago. At this point, I'd be damn glad to swap East Carolina with the Cuse. With Pitt, UConn, Louisville, WVU with Huggins and a rejuvenated Georgetown we really dont need Boewhine and his collection of slaps anymore.
