I remember watching that fight with friends ... after round 12 we were going to bail but I insisted we stick around for the decision. I said that stranger things have happened. Honestly, I thought the Zarate-Pintor thing was worse (same fight but with a knockdown in there, and they didn't call it a draw but a win for the wrong guy). Hagler-Antuofermo I saw as MMH's but then again I gave a guy 9-to-2 on the fight.

The 72 Olympics, for as ridiculous as things were, can't really count because basketball isn't a sport where judges decide a winner - you win by scoring more than the other team. And the point in any team sport is - even if a close game was decided by a bad call in the end, either team made enough correctable mistakes earlier in the game to not have things come to that point. Also, BT Express's comments were right on the mark - the US got back in the game when they started to run and ignored the slow, deliberate style imposed by Hank Iba.
Figure skating and other Olympic sports are situations which are different. As bad as some of the Olympic decisions have been, some figure skaters trust international judges more than their own judges. In figure skating, if you have a skater or team which was the top in their country and has a chance to do well in international competition, they are going to win the national competition unless they have two disasters. The reason is that if they lose to someone who is unknown, that team and the new champion has no chance in international competition. Figure skating people used to say, "it wasn't their turn".
