FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- - Hurricane researcher William Gray lowered his 2007 forecast slightly Friday, calling for 15 named storms, with eight becoming hurricanes and four becoming intense.

On May 31, at the outset of hurricane season, Gray had called for 17 named storms and nine hurricanes, five of them intense.

``We've lowered our forecast from our May predictions because of slightly less favorable conditions in the tropical Atlantic,'' said Philip Klotzbach, a member of Gray's team at Colorado State University.

And that dude probably makes more than most of the people who post on this board.

I've never been able to figure out why Hurricane predictions are made from Colorado anyway. Was the "Winter Climate Research Center" at Florida State taking up too much room?

And you know he knows his **** about hurricanes because he's in ... Colorado?

This guy must be the Roxy Roxbourough for weather nerds.

And has established himself as the premier hurricane forecaster in academia. So what?

Am I missing something?

When Max Mayfield quit, one of the stories on him mentioned how exhausting the past couple of years had been.

Which is interesting, since it didn't ask the question I've always pondered: What do these guys do from Nov. 1 through June 1 (and to be more accurate, Nov. 1 through July 31, since almost nothing forms before August anyway)?

Um, he's apparently an expert in a field. What's the problem here?

Oh, and most of the working population probably make more money than the majority of posters on this board.
