Yup, I'm not answering until I know if it's about origin or current residence.

Excellent job with the regions, though. I'd refer to "Near Midwest" as "Great Lakes" and "Far Midwest" as "Great Plains," but that's just nitpicking. Good intuition, as a Southerner, I'm glad to see the Deep South differentiated from all those Yankees up in Virginia.

I hope Robert E. Lee jumps out of his grave and slaps you silly.

I know, I know, the Confederate heritage is as strong in Virginia as it is anywhere...perhaps stronger than anywhere else.

But Virginia has a northern sub-region that's more Mid-Atlantic than Southern as far as the ambience goes. And the geography feels more Mid-Atlantic as well...crossing into Virginia from NC along I-95, one sees pine trees give way to deciduous trees...just feels different.

In any case, whether justified or not, people from the Deep South consider themsleves more Southern than their fellow Southerners in Virginia...and they laugh at DC and Maryland being lumped in with "the South."

I realize that the southern and western parts of Virginia are, for better or for worse, very Southern. I'd actually say worse...seems to me those parts have a lot of what's bad about the South without too much of what's good.

I once visited a friend who just moved to DC ... he was all "I can't believe I live in the South." Sorry but D.C. and the burbs is not the South (but the rest is). Neither is most of Florida, to be quite honest ... not from a cultural perspective ... now myself ... I am in the ****ing Deep Fried South.
