The DNA evidence neither puts them in nor excludes them. It just puts in someone else.

The cops coerced a confession out of a minor with a 72 IQ.

The prosecutors used Stephen King novels as evidence of Satanism.

The foreman of the jury introduced the confession during deliberations in the trial of the other two despite the judge's explicit instructions not to.

This case was ****ed up 15 ways from Sunday.

These guys would seem likely to be the killers.

Byers was quoted in that linked story saying he didn't believe the guys did it and is glad to see them get out. An earlier story (in the C-A's "previous news" section) talked about how Byers and one of the convicts had gone from calling each other the murderer to being pen pals.

Depends on the DNA's source. A stray hair? Sure. Ejaculate? God, I hope not.

One of those stories in the "previous news" package, can't remember which one, said there was a hair that was "consistent with" the DNA of one of the stepdad's friends. The defense attorney argued that the remote location made such a placement very unlikely to be accidental. The stepdad said he must have picked up the hair while sitting at his friend's house, then brought it home where it transferred to his stepson on the couch or something, then the kid wore it to the site of the killing. A far-fetched scenario to say the least.

My enduring memory from all this came from a relative on my wife's side of the family who was an executive in the W. Memphis hospital the day Byers wife came in freaking out and saying she needed a mental health person. This was like sometime between the murders and the trial. That can be read a number of ways, but from what we were told, Daddy Byers was a real nutjob.

I remember a kin of one of the WM Three had a baby that was found dead in her bathtub in 2000. The cops said something about there being a domestic dispute to the press, which got the publisher of the paper involved because the detective had been "misquoted." Well in a one on one with the publisher the detective said well, he did say that but didn't think the paper would quote him. Turns out it wasn't off the record but it was his understanding that most of what he said was always off the record. Then there were rumors that the publisher was actually the third wheel of the triangle. Anyway, the whole damn case got dropped.

There was another major WM cop case that was severely bungled too.

Heard one of the film producers interviewed this afternoon. They were doing final edits this week and expected to be done Monday in time for a debut at the Toronto Film Festival. Then they got the call to come back and shoot a new ending.

If there was no DNA at the murder site from any of the 3, I am glad they are free.

Watched a few of the YouTube videos and I have two initial questions that I could find no answers for:

1) Why were these three suspects from the start? Were they in the area? Was it just a matter of pinning it on someone because people were outraged?

2) Why are so many celebrities getting behind this? I'm sure there are tons and tons and tons of innocent people who go to jail everyday, but this case seemed to really strike a chord with some, specifically Eddie Vedder.

On a side note, why do I feel the slightest bit duped by this whole thing? At the end of the videos is a link that says, "To donate." Why would I donate, when I'm not 100 percent convinced you didn't do it. In fact, I'm quite torn about the whole thing, but I agree with everyone previously who said it was handled poorly from the start.

They looked different and acted different. And by different i mean listened to metalica and read stephen king.
if you remember back to that time period, a massive of hysteria was sweeping the land about the occult and satanism.
if you linked stephen king reading to the killing of three kids now, it would get laughed out of court.
sort of like "genital mutilation." that with slightly advanced science proven to be the work of a hungry turtle.
it was partiially hige profile because of the hbo documentaries.
the sheer craziness of calling stephen king readers satanists.
it was also a death row case and this is the highest profile death row release in years if not decades.
but the most important reason why it gathered attention is because the wm3 didn't kill anyone.
a more plausible case can be made for the stepfather and one of his buddies doing it.
when the cops don't follow up one of them being seen covered in blood and walking into the bojangles, then it is a pretty screwed up case.
