the only club that will have me
Sirs, Madames,

In building up my DVD collection of my favorite films I've hit a few dead ends. I figure/hope that one day everything under the sun will make it to disk but a few items I can't find on anything but VHS or Brit/Euro DVD formats. Others have been issued and pulled and, as collectibles, are out of my price range.

What are the best films not on DVD (or very scarce) ...

My partial list:

Soldier in the Rain with McQueen and Gleason (old VHS only apparently)
This Sporting Life with Richard Harris (out of print)
A Taste of Honey (Brit format only)
Two Lane Blacktop (issued, pulled and about 250 bucks for the collectible limited edition)

YHS, etc

Hack the region coding on your DVD player. I did and it's opened up an entire world of treasures unavailable in the US. Lots of stuff that's OOP in the States is available on Region 2 DVDs.

Here in Hollywood, lore has it the most unobtainable DVD is the original Fletch -- never officially released due to a contract issue that has yet to be resolved.

Fletch has been released on DVD in the US twice. A special edition came out not more than two months ago.

If you want to talk about unresolved contract issues do some research on Jerry Lewis's The Day the Clown Cried. That's the holy grail of cinema and the single reason many Seattle International Film Festival "Secret Fest" passes are sold. Word is that if the flick ever gets released Jerry will win an Oscar.

I love this Harry Shearer quote about The Day the Clown Cried:

With most of these kinds of things, you find that the anticipation, or the concept, is better than the thing itself. But seeing this film was really awe-inspiring, in that you are rarely in the presence of a perfect object. This was a perfect object. This movie is so drastically wrong, its pathos and its comedy are so wildly misplaced, that you could not, in your fantasy of what it might be like, improve on what it really is. "Oh My God!" — that's all you can say.

Decline of Western Civilization Part 1. I heard it's in the works, but not out yet. I've always wanted to see it.

I'm just glad we got the Donner cut of Superman II. Sure, it wasn't any better than what the Salkinds put out, but it's a nice little piece of history.
