Tips for a day or two in Denver

Planning a short road trip, mostly to see the Rockies and Sky Sox play, but will also have some time to kill. I'll have most of Friday in Denver, and possible Friday night after the game (haven't decided yet). Any suggestions on what to do? Bonus points if it's cheap. Super bonus points if it's free and I don't have to drive there. I'm planning to stay at a hostel nearish Coors Field.

Lots of good brewpubs, etc., in LoDo. Wyncoop is good, the Breckenridge Brew Pub is right by the stadium (touristy, but crowded and fun) and lots of other restaurants/souvineer shops, etc., on Blake Street. Several have nice outdoor rooftop bars.

There's a nice pedestrian mall just south and east of the stadium about 6-7 blocks.

Go up in the rotunda of the capitol. Great view from the observation deck.

If you do get a car, Buffalo Bill's grave is up in Golden, as is Annie Oakley's, the Coors Brewery and a great downtown drugstore that's closing but neat to tour.

Red Rocks is amazing.

Drive up to Boulder... look around... walk inside the Hotel Boulderado ... drive up into the Flatirons and look out over the city... walk through Folsom Field....

Red Rocks. If a concert's there, go see it and get there early to get quality seating. If not, Films on the Rocks is always a good time on a nice night. (Tonight's movie is Wedding Crashers, BTW!)

Also, in Sedalia (just south of the city) is the Cherokee Ranch and Castle.

For a good pint of micro, hit Falling Rock Tap House on Blake Street after a Rockies game.

If you go to Golden, please, please please do NOT go to the Coors Brewery.

Do, however, ask locals where the SECOND largest brewery in Golden is and you'll thank me for suggesting it.

Edit update 8/27: Hope it's not too late for your trip, but the name of it is the Golden City Brewery. Very small spot with different home brewed beers. They have a few table there where you can unwind, play cards, meet other people there, very friendly little place.

There are lots of bars and such right outside Coors Field. Breckenridge is good (I was just there yesterday) but as someone else mentioned, there are many others with rooftop seating. The 16th Street Mall is four blocks from Coors and goes 2.5 miles, ending at the Capitol, which has tours and, yes, great views from the observation deck. You can pretty much walk to anywhere downtown. And there are free busses on the 16th Street Mall that run all day and night.

The Coors tour is boring, and besides, it's Coors. Take the hour drive north to Fort Collins and go to the New Belgium brewery. No need to take the tour to get decent amounts of Fat Tire and other solid beers. Also, Fort Collins is a fun town, and good places to eat in Old Towne.

Boulder (30 miles away) is very nice with lots of shops and good places to eat. Also has a walking mall. Tons of hiking and biking trails nearby. Rent inner tubes and go tubing on Boulder Creek.

The recommendation of Red Rocks cannot be overstated. It's tremendous.

If you want to hit the mountains, drive up to Estes Park and go into Rocky Mountain National Park. Or drive west to Idaho Springs and find the exit for Mount Evans and drive to the top for some great scenery. Go early because the clouds roll in early afternoon (I was on a peak two miles to the west on Saturday and it was clouded over in mid-afternoon).

If you're going to Colorado Springs for the Sky Sox, check out the Garden of the Gods in Springs. You can pay, I want to say $15, and drive up to the top of Pikes Peak. Go check out the Air Force Academy nearby. The Royal Gorge is about 90 minutes southwest of Springs.

Eat at the Chophouse. It's expensive, but worth it. It's right by Coors Field.
