I haven't followed this as closely as some of you.

Has it come out that Tiger fired Williams for working while Tiger was off the tour?

I am not bagging on him for wanting to work. You made the comment that he didn't have income for two years without any knowledge of the contract. Everyone assumes he made 10% off of Tiger's winnings. If Tiger is as cheap as his reputation Stevie probably had a fixed contract with a bonus and was paid over the two year span.

If Stevie wanted to find other work he should have resigned. If Scott sucked balls, he would have went back to Tiger. He wanted it both ways.

I don't know his contract but standard in the industry is only $$ if you work, plus percentage of winnings. Read a while back that Tiger felt that since he won so much (and he did, nearly 30-40% at one time) he lowered the payout. Nevertheless, Williams raked it in, no doubt. But the past two years, Tiger won..um nothing, barely played, and did not score much $ at the finishes either. Which means, very high probability that Williams was not getting $$ at all.

Knowing how stingy Tiger was/is, very hard to see him guaranteeing Williams anything; very likely he was thinking, "I don't get paid, you don't get paid."

Just for the record, Tiger won $1.29 million on the PGA Tour last year, which doesn't include his overseas performances. 72nd on the PGA. In 12 events. So 12 weeks of work, Williams made over $100,000. That left him 40 weeks of work where he could pick up some housepainting jobs so he could pay the bills.

This year, yeah, hasn't been much work - although he's still won $620,000. But last year, I think Williams was doing all right. Whatever he made, hardly qualified as nothing.

Fire away, Stev(i)e. He has every right to do that, just like Tiger had every right to dump him. But let's not make it sound like he made no money last year, or even this year.

I think that's what Williams is claiming, but Tiger's people are disputing that is the reason.

Also, I thought I read where, following the Open when Tiger won at Torrey Pines and then had his knee surgery, that Tiger was paying Williams a set salary before the percent of winnings, whether he was playing or not. I don't know if it started then or was like that the entire time they were together (or even if that is true in the first place), but I find it hard to believe that Williams would be loyal enough to sit there and be fine with Woods taking months and months off at a time (whether by injury, scandal, whatever) and sit idly by without being paid by him and without looking for other bags to carry.

Is anyone else shocked Mickelson didn't immediately fire his caddie and hire a sweetheart like STEVIE? Williams should thank his God every night that Tiger's success means he and his kid won't have to worry about money again for the rest of their lives (unless STEVIE is a moron with his money).

So Stevie apologizes for basically taking credit for Adam Scott's win last weekend and then follows it up by again acting as if people come out to see HIM carry a bag.

Good lord again. The pairing of Woods and Williams was truly the perfect storm of the 2 biggest assholes on the planet.

The only person in the world who could make Williams look like a sympathetic figure is Woods. And the only person who could make Woods look even a bit sympathetic is Williams.

Say what you want about Woods, he's playing this perfectly by keeping quiet and letting Williams dig himself a deeper and deeper hole. I would love it for Woods to win the PGA this week and then be completely gracious when he gets the inevitable Stevie questions.

Last night, ESPN Classic Canada showed highlights of the 2000 PGA (Woods-May going head to head). I had forgotten just how compelling that day was. Just birdie after birdie after birdie by both of them.

The reason I brought that up is just to say I'm sure Stevie has had dental work done since then. In 2000, he was a dead ringer for Gary Dell'Abate. He looks a bit less simian now.

Tiger goes back into hibernation after tomorrow. He looks like an amateur now, absolutely no plan. You'd expect more, really, from him and/or his team.

Think of a successful professional golfer's life, you need a caddie, the list of tournaments you're going to play, how much prep to do.

Tiger has none of this:

Caddie: Some friend/business confidant. Well if you're going to fire Williams, you should have had a better plan in place than the dude who hooked me up with my ladies.

Prep: What is his plan for the future? Nada.

Schedule: Does he even know?

I've been reading this book about the psychology of golf -- hey, it's cheaper than another driver or putter, and it's about as likely to make a difference -- and there's this one section that talks about what you're playing for. It focuses on how you frame issues both before, during and after a round, and how such framing shapes your ability to make emotion work for you rather than against you. I wonder if maybe Tiger's dealing with a fundamental shift in what he's playing for, and that, along with the apparent physical issues, is contributing to such a spectacular fall.
