If he continues to play anywhere near respectable the rest of the year, I say you now have to cash in and make Rocco the captain's pick. People certainly won't be tuning in for Tiger.

Rocco's made like two cuts all year and always plays well at the Open. Unless he goes on a tear this summer, which would probably get him in the top-8 anyway, I doubt he's a captain's pick.

I said it before, and I'll say it again. He had no business in that playoff. He should have swallowed his pride and his unbending desire to win and look at the bigger picture. In fact, he shouldn't have played in that tournament at all. It was a mistake, and he might pay for it for the rest of his career. The fact that he eked out another major title means nothing in the grand scheme.

The Golf Channel story provides no sources. I don't know when it was posted, but I heard about this 30 minutes ago on CNN.

I think you're overreacting a tad. He'll be fine by the time next year rolls around. Winning the Open the way he did only adds to his legend and no major will have the same meaning since they "didn't beat Tiger"

He apparantly was told by doctors he needed this surgery two weeks ago -- and basically told them to patch him up well enough so he could play the US Open then he'd shut it down.

In the meantime, Retief Goosen was quoted as saying that he thought Woods was faking his injury........

I agree with spinning's take on the Ryder Cup ... Tiger historically has been mediocre (certainly by his standards) in the international competitions. I'd love a team filled with guys like Kenny Perry. I just don't think Tiger cares that much about the Ryder Cup.

I still don't get your logic, Stallion.

It's the same logic applied to any athlete with an injury. And I think it's probably silly that we classify these guys who play hurt as some sort of macho stud. If I show up at work with a broken leg and declare that I'll get through the next week and then go to the doctor while I'm on vacation, I doubt anyone would applaud me for it. But we do that with athletes, and it's wrong. There are plenty of retired athletes limping around on one leg because they didn't want to let the fans down.

It's a judgment call. I'm saying I think he made the wrong decision. But you're free to disagree, and I expect lots of people to disagree. After all, I'm taking an unpopular position. I know that. But it's still how I feel. I can't change that.

Now you're shifting the goalpost somewhat. Here's what you said when you expanded your comment on the U.S. Open thread ...

"I wouldn't call it classy if he withdrew when he thought he could win. I'd just call that dumb. But if he wakes up and knows he can't play for ****, it'd be selfish and petty for him to risk an entire career simply because he can't accept defeat. To me, admitting defeat and bowing out gracefully is a show of class."

... So the classy move was to play, because it's obvious Tiger thought he could win (then did). And he didn't play for (crap).

I understand about risking injury and about how doctors told him not to play last week. But by Sunday night, could he have done any more harm than he already did? Doesn't seem to me there would any difference in his knee from Sunday to Monday, so there would be no reason to pull out. If there were any moment to pull out, it would have been Thursday morning, based on doctor's advice. But once he commits, he commits.
