Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

Help Support Sports Journalists Forum:

I only know (vaguely) who the guy is because I asked a senior in our youth group who the best players in the NBA are right now. He filled me in on Gilgeous-Alexander a little bit. Like a few others, I pay very little attention to the NBA anymore, especially since they stopped calling traveling.
So you haven’t been watching since 1970?

I don’t watch the NBA either - but basketball is the second most popular sport in the USA - so I have an inch-deep knowledge of the top players in the NBA. I don’t know how you can consume sports media without absorbing some via osmosis.

This.
Having stated that, however, I pay a little bit of attention to the Pistons and occasionally tune-in to Bulls radio because of its Chuck Swirsky-Bill Wennington tandem. They are entertaining.
I mostly do not know much about the players they are talking about, though.
Oh, there is also the hockey nut factor.

Because mostly they still only talk about Lebron and Jordan the few times I accidentally tune in to some national sports talk show?

Listen to one Zach Lowe podcast on the NBA and you'll probably be hooked. Stay away from the national shows and Perk and those types (just like anything else in the mainstream). I love the league and its players and the analysis that comes with it. It's a smart-as-hell league.

Depriving myself of watching Nikola Jokic and Wemby is a choice I won't make.

99.9% of my sports media consumption is BBC/Times of London/other UK outlets.

I think I have said before that I have about zero interest in NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL, so no use watching/reading U.S. outlets.

This.
I follow the Lakers and Warriors religiously but I have the league ticket or whatever it’s called and watch random games all the time because the athleticism on display by even the lowliest teams is unmatched in sport today.

I love the games. I rarely consume any other form of sports media.

I have long thought some the greatest athletes in world play in the NBA.
I guess my interest started diminishing years ago when the rosters began turning over seemingly every season, and the three- or four-team trades.
I simply was not interested in keeping up to date.
Then, again, there was the hockey nut component.

SGA competes in a local NBA division and in a state that's about 35 miles from where I live. Yes, it's a small market (and truth be told, I figured Joker was a better candidate) but he is not unknown and will become better-known very shortly.

Dirk Nowitzki won an MVP.
