It's pretty much an American award. Don't think the Big 3 in tennis ever got it, even shared.

The last non-Japanese, non-American winner was Jose Altuve in 2017 (Venezuelan, still MLB). On the wimmin's side you have to go back to Annika (2004-05) and Lorena Ochoa (2006-07).

Outside of those, you have to go all way back to Ben Johnson (Canadian, 1987) for an AP non-American male winner.

I don't expect an Indian cricket star to win necessarily, but someone like a Beckham or Messi should sneak in once in a while, you'd think.

He also won back-to-back world championship road races, two of the last three Tour of Flanders, the last two Strade Bianche (winning this year despite a big crash), and nearly every single-day or stage race he's entered over the past two years. He may be the most dominant athlete on the planet right now.
