And I'll pose the same question that was posed earlier: why do so many people seriously deny the Holocaust when there's so much OVERWHELMING AND TERRIBLE evidence to the contrary?

Or is that the reason -- because it's so overwhelming and terrible that you don't want to think that people are capable of doing this to other people?

But seriously -- why would you deny the Holocaust?

Buck, imagine you are an anti-Semite. You believe that Jews are evil, amoral people, who run the world for their own benefit and would stop at nothing to bring down people like you. Imagine that you believe that the Jews killed your lord and savior to boot. You honestly, in your sick, demented mind believe there is no evil that Jewish people will not stoop to commit.

So then, when something absolutely horrifyingly awful occurs like the Holocaust, you believe it was just a ploy created by the Jews to get sympathy and support for an Israeli state. When that kind of hatred overwhelms your soul, you simply cannot stand by and watch them get sympathy. That's why people deny it.

wow dude, step off the ****ing ledge. you either read sarcasm into buck's post somewhere where you shouldn't or you're just a jackass. i'll leave that for you to decide, but to call buck, someone who i don't always agree with an anti-semite is bull****.

here's a way to get over this: go take another hit of acid, trip for 7-8 hours, get a good night's sleep, and the burnout and irrationality will no longer be there.

Pope wasn't calling me an anti-Semite. He was trying to answer my question. And he did a decent job, even if I can't comprehend that mindset in a human being. Stay out of this discussion if that's all you're going to bring to it, OK?

Back to the question ... Hell, I can understand the Germans-who-fell-for-Nazism mindset easier than I can understand the Holocaust-denying mindset. At least those people were in a desperate situation of the Great Depression, not to mention still recovering from the destruction of WWI all around them. They got sucked into the demented but idealistic (in a generic sense) rantings of a man who promised them the world ... and then came very close to giving it to them.

But I don't think it's just because so many people can be anti-Semitic. There's a far-out-there line that an anti-Semite has to cross before (s)he can begin to believe that the Holocaust was ... gulp ... not real. For example, I know plenty of people, even members of my own family, who believe all kinds of old stereotypes about blacks, about Jews, about Catholics, about gays, about all kinds of long-persecuted groups. But even my very old grandmother, who can be racist and anti-Semitic as hell sometimes, isn't close to crossing that line of being a Holocaust denier. I mean, that borders on insanity denial. Psychopathic stuff.

I think I can try to empathize with anybody in the world, try to get in their shoes and understand how they feel, no matter how demented they may be. (Hell, I just got in the mind of a German Nazi sympathizer, didn't I?) But I can't for the life of me put myself in the shoes of someone who denies the Holocaust. And I'm trying! I'm trying! But I can't even FATHOM how you could block that out of your mind, no matter what else you believed about Jews or anyone else. Can't even begin to comprehend ...
